Aratama Ryokan

Beppu Station Hotel

Hotel is centrally placed in front of the station, I had a comfortable room on 11th floor, average size for Japan, very comfortable bed. The buffet BFast was ok, choice of Japanese and western food... A good surprise was the onsen, that I particularly appreciated after a day spent walking, exploring Beppu' s Hells .. The hotel is very clean and tidy and all the staff were kind and helpful, I could leave my luggage at the reception on the leaving day while I was exploring Beppu on my own... Good rate quality/ price, I would go there again, if I were in Beppu again.

Stayed in a superior king room for one night. The hotel is quite new and is near Beppu JR station. My room has a nice view of the city and could see the sea since there were not many tall buildings in front. The public bath was on the top floor and there was an open air pool on the rooftop, which could be accessed from inside the changing room of the public bath. Guests need to be careful that the rooftop pool can be used by both male and female guests together, and naturally users will be wearing some sort of swimming costume instead of going up naked. Of course if you don’t intend to go to the rooftop pool, then you don’t need to bother and can enjoy the hotspring bath on the top floor as freely as you like. The hotel doesn’t have its own parking facilities but it is in partnership with an adjacent public carpark which offered discounted 24-hr parking at 500 yen (one ingress / egress only). Just give the front desk staff your carpark entry ticket and they will process the special fee for you. The areas around the hotel were still relatively quiet when I visited, probably not yet adjusted to receiving more foreign visitors. Surprised me that it was already quite challenging to find a better place to have dinner shortly after 7pm.

I spent my first two hours doing what I haven’t done for almost three years, driving along the snaking roads in Japan. Arriving at Amane Seikai you feel euphoric, the seafood kaiseiki wasn’t the best, but the sake was good, and I was still giddy from seeing the spacious (1776 sq feet) junior suite with its own ocean view pool, jacuzzi, open-air onsen bath. “Room” 230 is in the new wing (according to my booking.com description), the apartment/room is not especially stylish, except for one little bottle of water and some coffee/tea, the mini bar and fridge were empty, but it has a spectacular view and you’ll still get your ocean view from bed and feel the constant gravitational pull of your private open-air onsen. I got up at 6ish just to catch the first rays of sunlight and to listen to the sound of the waves. Last but not least, the staff that checked me in was really nice and spoke perfect English ( coz he is from Nebraska ☺️)
