The hotel proprietor, Bernardo Pimentel, is your host and guide to the attractions of the Duoro Valley. He is engaging and personable--in four languages--Portugese, Spanish, English and French. His family has owned the property since the 1700s. He recommended a great vineyard and a great river cruise. The hotel's veranda has a stunning view of the Duoro Valley--including the river, which is barely visible in the posted photo. My friend and I generally stay at four and five star hotels, but while this is a three star, it is at least as good as any four star. The family style dinners are amazing and you meet other guests from around the world. The hotel has only eight rooms, so the feeling is familial. And no, this is not a paid review. I come from America, but have lived in Munich for the last twelve years. A gem not to be missed!
