The Nuthouse Cottage, located on 48 acres of farmland with a recreational pond, is a three story home with a well-appointed and convenient kitchen. The comfy living room has a gas fireplace and opens onto porches with rockers and tables, a gas grill, a vined pergola with a chiminea, and perennial gardens.On the second floor are two bedrooms with queen beds and a shared bath with a spacious walk-in tiled shower. The master bedroom features a gas-burning fireplace while the second bedroom has a spiral staircase up to the Crow’s Nest. This nice perch has a 360-degree view and is perfect for curling up on the window seats to read and nap. Little ones love sleeping up in the stars.Walks through the adjacent hardwood sanctuary with an understory of ferns and mountain laurel always reveal natural surprises. Birds and wildlife abound. Down at Reflection Pond, stocked with bream and bass, the fishing is easy. Sit in the boathouse out of the sun, or fish from the dock. Enjoy a meal under the picnic shelter where there's a charcoal grill and an open fire pit for roasting hot dogs and S'mores. Dogs and children have lots of running room. Two kayaks, tubes, and a floating dock are available so you can get out on the water. The land is beautiful and promising at all times of the year. In May and June, the gardens are blooming and in July, blueberries are ripe for the picking. By August, fields are colored with wild-flowers and butterflies. Come late September into October while the leaves are at peak color, the Virginia Beauty apples ripen and are ready to harvest. And then, even in winter, with or without snow, there is a stark leafless beauty. In any season, the night sky, away from city lights, is perfect for stargazing.The New River is just 10 minutes away and kayaking / tubing the river is a favorite activity. Greystone Cottage is newly renovated, dog-friendly, and a 5 min walk to restaurants, shopping, and countless special events that take place in the historic Town of West Jefferson (car shows, Christmas in July, parades, etc.). The cottage has a mountain view, large gated porch (perfect for keeping your dogs contained on the porch as needed), private hot tub (which is cleaned and balanced after each guest), gas grill, and fire pit with Edison lights and up lighting illuminating the outdoor area at night. The cottage is equipped with keyless entry, fiber optic high speed internet, smart TVs, washer and dryer, mini-split A/C and heat, and a fully functional kitchen. The kitchen has a stainless steel fridge, stove, oven, and dishwasher and the cabinets are stocked with utensils, pans, dishes, cups, etc. The refrigerator does not have an ice maker; however, there are ice trays in the freezer and a Brita filtered pitcher in the fridge. There is a Keurig coffee maker in the kitchen, an electronic kettle, and coffee pods and creamers are provided for each guest along with other essentials like laundry, dishwashing pods, bath and hot tub towels. As an added treat, we provide some graham crackers, Hershey bars, and marshmallows for fun by the fire pit. The two bedrooms have brand new Sealy memory foam mattresses (Queen).You can pretty much walk to anything you want to do downtown, but you are also only a few min. drive to Christmas tree lots, Old Barn Winery and Vineyards, hiking at Mt. Jefferson, Mountain Aire golf course, rafting on the new river, and countless restaurants and other experiences.Dogs: As mentioned in the listing, we allow guests to bring two, small dogs, if they desire for an extra fee. Meant as a respite from the hustle and bustle, the living room hosts the only TV, but there is Wi-Fi is available throughout the home. The TV does include Netflix and Amazon Prime. Gas logs make the living room extra cozy on chilly fall days. The living room includes a TV, oversized sofa, two wingback chairs, and additional chairs that can be moved to the kitchen for more seating. Please note, we have a newly installed window unit AC. In 155 years we haven't needed it, but we realize for some guests it’s a must. Open windows, an occasional fan, or the forced cold air of the AC will have you feeling cool and comfortable. The peace and quiet will have you drifting off to sleep in no time. The fully equipped kitchen includes a refrigerator, gas range, microwave, pots, pans, coffee pot, crockpots, cooking tools and utensils. The whole family can enjoy meals together at either the large kitchen table or the on the two patio tables.Both bedrooms feature full sized beds are decorated with both simplicity and comfort in mind. Gates on both the deck and patio will help ensure your dog can enjoy those too! Beautiful trees shade the side yard so it is enjoyable to sit outside (or lay out in the hammock) even on hot sunny days. Rope lights surround the back deck and create the perfect ambience after sunset. Our stereo connects to speakers on the deck, so you can enjoy music while outside. The oversized deck has two separate seating options with total seating for 8. At mealtime you can enjoy cooking outdoors on the gas grill. DOGGIE DETAILS:KEARNEY’S PLACE welcomes up to 4 dogs. There is NO pet fee. We do not discriminate based on breed or size, but due to the size of our cottage, we are unable to accommodate more than 2 XL-breed dogs (100+ pounds) per booking. All dogs must be housebroken, up-to-date on shots and must be crated when left in the cottage unattended (exceptions to crate requirement may be made by host on a case by case situation). We ask that you clean up after your pet and properly dispose of any waste. We are unable to accommodate animals other than dogs at this time. If you are bringing 4 dogs please note that we will limit the human occupancy to 4 people as we want to ensure that our cottage does not feel too crowed for our guests. If additional cleaning is required after your stay, we may assess an added cleaning fee. NEARBY RESTAURANTS AND ATTRACTIONS:Kearney’s Place is centrally located to everything that Ashe County has to offer. The New River is just a short 5 minute trip down Old Hwy 16. The new river is great for canoeing, fishing and tubing. We do not offer canoes, tubes or kayaks, but they can be rented locally. Our cozy cottage is just 3 minutes to Shatley Springs Restaurant, 5 minutes to The River House Restaurant and 15 minutes to Jefferson and West Jefferson. The town of West Jefferson has many boutiques and restaurants. Join us during the summer when the town hosts several fairs, live music, gallery crawls, a weekly farmers market and other events. If Autumn is more your season, join us when the fall foliage is in full swing and enjoy our local fall festivals, corn mazes, and pumpkin picking while surrounded by breathtaking colorful scenery. The holiday season offers a Christmas wonderland of lights throughout downtown, choose-and-cut Christmas trees at our many neighboring tree farms, as well as community holiday events. We are about 40 minutes from Boone, but perfect for a day trip to visit the college, downtown or to head over to Blowing Rock. We have a covered front porch for you to sit and relax while you enjoy your morning coffee. The sunroom and back deck offer a nice view of the spacious backyard and where you can listen to the peaceful sounds from the babbling creek. The backyard and creek are a great place to take a stroll, play games, cool off in the water, catch fireflies, or roast marshmallows while gathered around the fire. A gazebo overlooks the creek and cottage offering a place to play games or just sit and relax. The cottage is just a short 2 minute walk from the New River and only a 15 minute drive to the town of West Jefferson where you can find food, shopping, Mt. Jefferson State Park, and Ashe County Cheese. Various river outfitters are close by (10-15 minutes away) where you can rent tubes, canoes, or kayaks. Looking for a day trip during your stay: Grayson Highlands Park, Virginia Creeper Trail, Appalachian State University, Stone Mountain State Park, Tweetsie Railroad, and various ski resorts are all less than an hour away.The original portion of Baker's Cottage was built in 1935. It has unique characteristics that make it a one of a kind. Most of the ceilings in the house are low, between 6'10" and 7' high. Taller individuals may need to duck when walking through doorways.
