I've been coming to The Luttrell Arms for over twenty years. It's always been a fave of mine and my family and I have recommended it to dozens of friends over the years. I also work locally and send a lot of customers there with a glowing review. However I was recently informed by more than one them that they'd had a bad experience so feeling a little responsible, I thought I'd see for myself if their feedback was unfounded. I have left a review before but feel compelled to write another after having visited twice here in the past week. Once in the restaurant and once in the bar. The bar staff although new, were polite and helpful if not a tad confused. The manageress however not so polite or helpful and when we requested a different table, responded in an abrupt and overly loud manner, pretty much suggesting that it was our fault they couldn't accommodate us as we hadn't booked. I politely - but firmly - informed her that we had booked but we had been told on the phone that we couldn't reserve a specific table. When I requested a different table on arrival (ours was close to the door) all the other tables were empty but had reserved signs on) I was told that it wasn't possible as these other tables had been specifically requested, despite being told on the phone when I booked thay they were on a first-come first-serve basis - go figure! We had arrived early for this very reason. Anyway, we opted for a table in the front bar but there was a service-point less than two feet away from my chair and the same distance to the bar which would have become noisy and busy with customers and staff alike walking through the narrow room. By now we were feeling a tad unloved so we opted to go up to the terrace and try a pizza. They give you a buzzer so you can pick it up at the pizza bar and take it back to your table. When I asked the chef for some sauces he gestured toward the pay- point at the bar. I went there with my freshly baked pizza in hand to find no staff there. I returned to the pizza bar to tell them this and asked if they could give me some mayonnaise. They pretty much shrugged saying I couldn't use the sauces they had there in bottles as I had to pay for packet sauces. My pizza although delicious was getting less hot by the second and I was left to return to my table with no mayonnaise. Not a huge problem on the grand scale of things but we found the whole process quite tiresome. and somewhat less than memorable. My experience in the restaurant however was slightly better because we had a wonderful waiter on Sunday 11th August. He was polite, attentive and extremely welcoming. However...the manager who had been rushing around like an Olympian found fault with something he'd done and pulled him up on it for all to hear. I found this acutely embarrassing on behalf of this wonderfully professional waiter. and left feeling underwhelmed. I now understand why my friend's experience of this once friendly and charming hotel was less than he had bee
