Protea Hotel Gaborone Masa Square

We stayed at the this hotel 3 times in the space of a month. We returned here for many reasons, the location and the food. But what stood out for me the most was the staff. They were all so friendly and approachable, always willing to help when they can. Thank you to all the staff and in particular Bame, Thabile, Arnold, Babedi, Sharon and Keikantse. Roof top sunset bar is a really nice spot to relax and take in the sunset.

This was "base" for an in-and-out business trip to Botswana. Being central and offering a complimentary airport shuttle, it ticks a lot of boxes. The staff were professional and the check-in was seamless. A spacious room with a convenient work nook helped settle in. Room service was a little on the slow side (but I did order quite late after getting to the hotel around 8pm). My pasta was filling and tasty, as was the breakfast the following morning - the spread was everything you'd expect from a hotel buffet. I see quite a few negative reviews, but that was not the case with my experience. Perhaps there's a better/quieter side of the hotel to stay, as the square housed a bar and restaurant. The nearby bar was an opportune venue for some impromptu customer drinks, so there's certainly an upside to its proximity. I won't hesitate to book for future business trips.

I am really on the fence with hote. Do I like it/Dont I like it. Let me start with the like. Rooms are really nice. It is very central in the CBD of Gaborone. Staff is friendly. The negatives: First day. Basin is blocked. It took about 3 hours before (after a second request) to cone and attend to it. The duvet cover close, or use to close with Valcro. Do you know how valcro attack the hair on your legs during the night. Yesterday I ordered a "Dagwood Club Sandwich" 10 Minutes after ordering I get phoned to tell me the dont have Chicken. Guys there is stores sellig Chicken walking distance from the hotel. Really? The breakfast is really an offering not worth the price.payed for it. The breadrolls is for sure not even yesterdays fresh rolls - maybe last weeks? The Cheddar Chees on offer is dried out! This morning at 08h00 the dishes were mostly empty and it too a while to be filled again. I think that maybe to Negatives is outplaying the Positives.

Be warned - Avoid this hotel. I had such a horrible, horrendous and the worst stay ever at this property. The status of the room was soo filthy, unacceptable and in the worst state ever. I have never ever been in any property Marriott or otherwise that has these extreme, grave and serious uncleanliness among other issues. The room hadn't been cleaned and it was not known when it had last been cleaned. Worse, it was evident that deep cleaning never takes place as well as the serious absence of oversight and supervision including monitoring of the rooms, its contents and above all cleanliness. From blood soiled beddings including duvet, curtains, curtain sheers to accumulated heavy dirt and dust across all corners of the room. I never ruled out the existence of bedbugs in my room - due to unexplained blood soiled linen, curtains, sheers etc. (see photos). I experienced serious allergies due to these extreme grave and unacceptable uncleanliness of the room. Extremely poor management. Zero quality control. I'm never coming back.

The Reception Staff is fantastic. The restaurant is great. The conference rooms are great. The rating would have been a full 5 but the cleaning crew turned the AC off while cleaning and didnt turn it back on when leaving so the room got hot and took hours to cool again. And the cleaning crew often shorted me on towels and washclothes. I had to ask for an iron and it was removed from the room the next day. Some glitches but otherwise an excellent stay.
