We spent a couple of nights here with our 5 year old and had a lovely time. We wanted to leave a review to balance out some of the other reviews and so we’ll focus on the positives only. Worth reading a few reviews to get a holistic view but one thing I’d say is this isn’t a place to ‘avoid’ in our opinion. We felt it was a beautiful place to spend a few days as part of maybe a longer trip around Borneo. That’s from the perspective of having kids. Maybe couples would stay longer. Photos show the view from the pool in the morning when the water is up - it is STUNNING! Water crystal clear. When the water goes out later in the day, the beach is exposed and our son spent a lot of time playing there digging. We were there 30th Aug - 1st Sept and weather was perfect. Hot!! Sun is really strong here, cover up! Wake up for sunrise if you fancy a beautiful view! Rooms comfy and good space. Staff are generally lovely. The most beautiful people. A particular shout out to the water sports staff, the female manager (I think she’s called Rosie), and the staff who help you on and off the boat, thank you Raj for the recommendation to get an Uber! We loved the snorkelling - perfect with an adventurous 5 year old who saw lots of fish but it wasn’t too deep. You can snorkel from the sunbeds and grab a paddle board - great fun! Our air con didn’t work in the first room (I think this is rare) and we were moved swiftly to a new room. Air con was great after that and slept well in it. We heard great things about Cove restaurant - we didn’t go as kids under 12 not allowed but the food sounded very good. We always got sun beds around 8/9am but understand that later in the day they might be taken. We didn’t get a chance to go to the private beach and see the rescue turtles but next time we would do. The real gem for us of this place is the view from the sunbeds as per pics. Read a few more reviews to see if it’s right for you as we focus here on the positives! Thank you Gayá for your beautiful people and stunning views

Sutera Sanctuary Lodges At Manukan Island

Kota Kinabalu|À 5.47km de la Gaya Island
We stayed here as part of a group tour. The first impressions were great as the staff took our luggage to our accommodation and they gave us a helpful briefing about the island. We were also welcomed with cold towels and a cold drink which was very welcome. The island does get very busy, particularly on weekends with day trippers, but we liked that there was a beach specifically for hotel guests. The hotel also has a pool but we didn’t use this. Our room was really nice with a comfy bed and fluffy pillows and good air con. We had a safe, a fridge and kettle and tea and coffee, and the bathroom was nice and spacious. We also had sofas to sit and relax with a tv. The only point I would make is that there were no shelves to put your clothes on in the rooms but we got creative and took the ironing board out of the cupboard and created our own makeshift shelf. It was so sweet that the staff left us a weather forecast on a card for the next day, and some chocolates in our room. The restaurant on the island was really good with nice breakfast choices and dinner options. Breakfast was included and we thought the food options and drinks were reasonably priced. We were also serenaded by a band who played a few songs for us at dinner which was fun. We loved walking along the pier where you could see baby black tips, puffers, needle fish and shoals of fish - anchovies. There are a lot of sandflies and mosquitoes on the island and in our room we were given a plugged in repellant along with a candle to deter them which the staff lit for us. Even though we wore repellent at night (dusk and dawn), we got so many bites so it is worth covering up at night; especially legs and feet. We also got lots of stings on the snorkelling trip from sea lice, so if you are sensitive to bites and feel allergic, we would recommend that you wear a long wetsuit or lycra pants if you have them. We had a lovely relaxing time here and it was a very enjoyable stay for us.

Fantastic service from the staff. Love the toiletries and bug repellent spray from the resort's spa, even though we weren't into spa treatments. The restaurant menu is limited, but the food tastes good. There's not much to see if you're into snorkeling, but kayaking and paddle boarding are fun alternatives. The island is easy to reach from Kota Kinabalu city center, but you wouldn't be able to see sunrise or sunset from here. Evening high tide brought some debris to the shore, but the resort would clean them up in the morning. And they have buffaloes to deal with sandflies.
