This is the worst B & B we have ever stayed in. The Inn at English Meadows was obviously once a lovely property, but it is need of modernisation. Our room looked lovely in the photos on their website. The reality was quite different. One of the windows in our bedroom had a small hole and large crack in it. The television didn't work, the bed was uncomfortable and the duvet cover had not been ironed. It looked as though the whole bed had not been changed since the last occupants. The owner Diane was not there so we told the person left in charge who assured us she would tell Diane. We met Diane the next day at breakfast and asked if if she had been told about the window or TV and she said she hadn't. We told her we had not slept well due to the window as it let in traffic noise and wind. We were there 2 days and nothing was done about the window or TV. I know it is probably not easy to get a glazier at short notice to replace a pane of glass but someone could have put a board over it to make it safe/weatherproof. We were not offered a other room. Breakfast - the first day, the starter was strawberries and watermelon. The strawberries tasted like they had been soaked in vinegar (ugh) The second course was French toast with raspberry puree. It was edible but nothing special. The second day the starter was coffee cake. My wife has a nut allergy so asked if it contained nuts as coffee cake often has walnuts or almonds in. Diane said she would find out and came back to say it did not have any nuts in. Having seen it being delivered to other guests my wife declined as it looked as though there were nurses I it. I do not like coffee cake so I also declined. Diane did not offer us an alternative. On another table, one of the guests asked if the coffee cake was gluten free, and was told it was not. Diane immediately asked if she would like strawberries and blueberries with yogurt as an alternative. I then asked if my wife and I could also have this as an alternative. Diane apologised and said she should have asked us. The gluten free guest got strawberries, blueberries and yogurt. My wife and I just got 10 blueberries and yogurt but no strawberries. We felt as if we were being treated differently with no justification for doing so. Housekeeping was practically non existent. The first day all guests at breakfast were asked if there room needed servicing. We said yes and expected it would be done after we had gone out for the day. After breakfast we returned to our room and found the bed had been pulled up but the bins had not been emptied, the bathroom area not cleaned and used cups not taken away. We would not recommend The Inn at English Meadows as it is overpriced and needs updating badly. For what we paid, and the reviews on the website we were expecting a much higher quality establishment than it was.
