The reviews were good but our experience was definitely not. We like the starters as they were tasty and plentiful but the main courses we had were bland even though they were recommended as the dish of the day. Slow service particularly with drinks orders.

I think this is what I had always imagined a hotel on a small Greek island would be like. But feared that mass tourism, hotel chains and so called development had killed them years ago. Not so Hotel Meganissi is that small family run hotel. However it comes with all the mod cons you could wish for, air conditioning, a swimming pool and good wifi. George with his family made our stay very comfortable. The restaurant serves authentic Greek food and it is great value for money. Breakfast is a self service buffet but you can ask for anything you like from the wonderful kitchen staff. The hotel runs a mini bus to and from Fanari beach in the morning and afternoon, although you can walk there if you prefer and can stand the heat. It is a 15 minute stroll down to Varthi where you can walk round the harbour admiring the boats and eat and drink in the many tavernas. Be warned it is uphill on the way back but there is a proper footpath and it is well lit. A lot of the hotel's clientele were returners which I think says a lot about the hotel and we will definitely be returning.

We go to the Hotel Meganisi to eat EVERY night we are on Meganisi. The food is consistently excellent and they have a few different 'specials' on every day in addition to the usual menu. George, his family and staff are wonderful. I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough.

Had a superior room with large balcony which was great with a lovely view but the main asset of this hotel is the superb hospitality which we received in the week from George and his staff. The food was exceptional and the service was top class. We could not recommend this hotel enough 11/10

We have eaten at this hotel meany times in the pass but unfortunately this year the food was not good. Very bland salty and uninteresting. Chewy lamb chops heavily over seasoned fish to which you can only taste salt and that applies to most of the food we had there. We gave up after a few nights and had food elsewhere which was very good. The hotel has a new cook and waiting staff who all need to be give a make over on there choice of clothes very unprofessional looking the worst been the cook who constantly chain smokes in between service. One of the female members of staff was moody and not very interested in her guests. The hotel has a very loyal following who seem to just go whit the flow which is fine and good luck to them however we refuse to follow blindly and put up whit average food. It is a shame to have to write such a negative review about the food as it was once a great place to eat but no longer.

We were recommended the food at this hotel so booked ahead for an evening meal. The food was indeed excellent and the service was very good (would have been nice if the servers were a bit smarter but it’s a small point). Not the most picturesque place, but definitely worth a visit for the excellent food!

Loved this hotel. We stayed in a superior room which was large and well equipped with a good bathroom and nice little balcony with lovely views. The food (breakfast and dinner) is excellent. The pool area is lovely. I am gluten intolerant and George had gf bread for me at breakfast and also gf rolls for dinner. He went through the menu telling me what was suitable and even cooked whitebait and saganaki specially for me without flour!! That was such a treat. It is a 15 min walk down into the harbour if you want more options for evening meal (and a 20min walk back uphill). All the staff are very friendly and efficient. Couldn't ask for anything more. I would recommend to anyone.

The most genuine and genuinely friendly welcome I/ we have ever received at any hotel anywhere. And that on our first ever visit! The welcoming party for the hotel’s minibus, which picked us up from the port, consisted of; owner George, his daughter Christina, a couple of other family members, plus, Makis who works in the hotel during the season. A few couples who were there for their umpteenth visit were treated to hugs and kisses by everyone as if they were returning members of the actual family not hotel guests! We were in Maganesi in just the second week of the season. Having only booked the week before, expectations for our room allocation were therefore not that high, but we were blown away to be given a room on the top floor of the main building with two balconies, stunning views over the pool and down the valley to a harbour with yachts, beyond which was the sea and distant mountains! That evening, we had dinner at the hotel which was very good. They have oven baked ‘specials of the day’ announced on a board by the main entrance from mid-day. We arrived on a Sunday so the special was slow cooked lamb with potatoes. It and everything else we chose was fantastic which is why we ate there again a few days later. The Hotel Maganesi’s has some lovely terraces and balconies to eat on with views of the valley the village or both! The hotel was one of only three restaurants we chose to eat in during our stay. Prices seemed to be on a par with most other Tavernas on the island which isn’t always the case in our experience of Greek hotels. This is a family owned and run 3* hotel with 5* standards of hospitality. Those looking for uniformed staff, name badges, cocktail bars and super luxurious surroundings will doubtless be disappointed. This type of hotel thankfully in my opinion, doesn’t exist on the island which makes Magenisi, both the island and hotel something of a welcome time machine taking you back to experience a simpler more personal Greece of the past. So, may I suggest that if you want a clean, pretty, unpretentious, relaxing and friendly environment with a family and staff who work tirelessly to look after you and genuinely care for their guests, then Hotel Maganesi is a jewel and almost perfect. The hotel itself has both character and characters, not least of whom is George himself a man who is perfectly suited to his role. Not surprising that many returning guests we met consider it a home from home and members of the family to be dear friends. We are also looking forward to going back!
