The Inn at Castle Rock

I would recommend the Inn at Castle Rock to everyone I know. The Inn is cozy and very much like home. The Staff is wonderful and accommodating. I love that there are no televisions in the rooms. It gives you time to actually spend time and talk with who you are there with.

The stench of the room was a mixture of vomit and body odor, a friend that we asked be a witness to the room described the smell as a dead animal (rat or mouse). I immediately started to gag upon entering the room. We have stayed in several hotels in Bisbee and can handle a musty smell, but this was beyond putrid. Went downstairs and waited for the incoming guests to leave the office so we could have a private discussion with the lady at the front desk (who was very friendly) and told her how rank the room smelled; asked if she would go up to the room with us so she could verify but she informed us she had no sense of smell so she couldn't verify. We explained there was no way we could sleep in that room and that we wanted to be refunded the $143 charged for the room. She told us she did not have the authority to make that decision, so she called her manager via cell phone. The manager told us that she couldn't refund us for the room, we should understand that the hotel was over 130 yrs old and has a musty smell. Our friend asked why they don't the musty smell on their website if they feel it's no big deal. We explained the odor was beyond musty, she again said that she couldn't refund us, and offered to place an ionizer machine in the room for an hour to sanitize the room. She also said that they hand clean the bathroom floors (no mop), and that a guest spent the night before in the same room and didn't complain. At no time did the manager show any sign of empathy or even offer to come to the hotel and see/smell for herself for a resolution. Our friend pointed out the Better Business Bureau accreditation plaque on the wall in the office and told the lady at the front desk that the hotel wouldn't want to lose the membership. I'll be filing a complaint with BBB next. We left the hotel without being reimbursed and will NEVER return to the Inn at Castle Rock. You'd be better off camping next to a landfill/garbage dump, during monsoon season, then to stay there. At least the foul stench would be less.

One star is too complimentary. Two rooms booked. Went in the rooms and left. Huge fire trap, terrible smells. We asked for a refund on only one of the rooms and the manager refused! Now I’m going to go on Trip Advisor and Yelp and report same. If you’re going to Bisbee, stay at Copper Queen or Schoolhouse Inn.

We stayed a night here on our way to Tombstone and Tucson. When I walked in to make an enquiry about vacancies I was met with, “Is that an Australian accent that I detect” and I answered back, “Is that a New Zealand accent that asked me “. A really pleasant place to stay, our room was small but we had a ensuite which for us was all that we need. It’s a very old Inn that adds to its charm and the owners and staff are very welcoming. You can use the great room for reading and there’s a little kitchen as well and in the morning they supply a continental breakfast that you help yourself too. Apart from all of that the nightly rate was really good. Bisbee is a cute little town.

I know what you're thinking: most modern hotels just don't have enough lace. Tasteful colors are just sooo 2003. Well you're in luck! The Inn at Castle Rock has lace to spare! Dusty ruffles top the purple and maroon lace curtains and surround the bed. And the color schemes! Orange, pink and purple all in the same room - a refreshing change from safe-playing chain hotels. Really, though: apparently the Inn was originally a boarding house. Go into your stay imagining you're a short-term boarder at a creaky old boarding house in the 1970s and you'll do fine. Do not imagine this was ever a grand hotel. There are TV rooms, no TVs in the room. We could hear fellow guests watching and chatting as they walked past our room.

Weather did not permit us to complete our reservation over Thanksgiving but we did provide 48 hour cancellation. 3 times we contacted the hotel directly, which we booked through initially, and no one ever returned a call. When I received my Visa statement there was no credit. I was told they had closed Nov books and would have to contact their accountant - I guess there isn’t even a laptop available to personnel. On the third call, personnel finally disconnected me. We would like to have rebooked with them at a later time but never now. They don’t do email either. They are a lodging establishment and I assume should be accustom to cancellations - terrible customer service!
