Hotel Miramar

My father is severely disabled, in a wheelchair, so before taking him on a 3 day break I decided to scout out the most accessible and appropriate hotel rooms. I arrived at the Miramar on Sunday evening. The reception staff - Sangio’ (spelling?) and Valentina - could not have been kinder or more accommodating. They showed me all the rooms which would be available the following day and we checked them for accessibility and lack of stairs etc. These were all communicated to the reservations manager Ivana Braut. On the Monday as agreed I confirmed the reservations by phone and by email, and received confirmation by return. Imagine my surprise and disappointment when on my return to the hotel I was shown to completely different rooms. One with lots of stairs - in a different building from the one originally agreed - and another in a basement with no natural light ! I declined the rooms offered and at 8pm had to make last minute alternative arrangements at another hotel- no easy matter in high season with an exhausted father in a wheelchair ! Let me emphasise that the reception staff were exceptional. And also all the other frontline staff including the waiters at the charming restaurant. The problem lies with the arrogant, inefficient and negligent reservations staff. It is noteworthy that they still have not written nor called to apologise. I suggest that the hotel owners / management take a close at whether they have the right people in place in the reservations / management departments. Perhaps they need to be replaced or to undergo extra training ? In the meantime, if you have a disabled relative - look elsewhere !

The hotel is great ! The location is very good, the food is fantastic.The complex is a very guest friend ,advanced level. A magnificent place for a quality rest

Golden Wedding Anniversary trip I was much influenced by the TripAdvisor reviews of this hotel and area when choosing the venue for our 50th Wedding anniversary celebrations. Our hopes and aspirations were well exceeded. This is a wonderful place where the staff are both friendly and unobtrusive, the food is excellent and the location and views are stunning. Our bedroom (330 is recommended) was more than we expected with a full view of the gardens and sea beyond. It really was 5 star stuff with a huge bathroom and separate WC. Little things were much appreciated, such as the 'beach bags' for taking down to the sun deck area and welcoming bottle of Croation 'champagne'. Whilst the overall cost of the holiday was not inexpensive, for the quality we received we both regarded our stay as good value. The location is also worthy of mention, in that it straddles the Lungo Mare, a 7 mile footpath which was constructed in the late 19th century and has been kept in good order. It is a lovely walk at the side of the sea with stunning views of the Adriatic and access to quiet bathing coves if needed. Volosko, a mile or so away, is a pretty and small fishing village with excellent lunchtime restaurants - we ate at the hotel at night. The hotel clientele is largely Austrian who were very pleasant and did not seem to resent having British guests accessing their secret treasure. The nearest EasyJet/Ryanair airport is Pula, a 1.5 hour drive away. Even that we enjoyed as we were taken along the coastal route with beautiful views. The airport is also brilliant as it is so small, enabling passengers to get through baggage and passport controls very quickly. Overall we felt that we were in something of a time warp with the Opitaja Riviera giving us an opportunity to imagine what the French Riviera was like c.60 years ago, but with modern advantages of easy access and (if needed) WIFI ...... All thoroughly recommended.

The Hotel Miramar is a classic old hotel with a rich history and very upscale feel with lovely décor and is incredibly clean. The best attribute is its location, right on a small peninsula along the walking promenade with a lovely setting jutting out right onto the water. . The hotel is located just north/east of the center of the small town of Opatija and the right turn onto a side street can be easy to miss. The building with reception where you check in is on this little side street. After checking in, if you have a car, you will drive down a narrow lane to the underground parking garage where you will be met by an attendant waiting by the parking space assigned to you with a large sign welcoming you and designating that space as yours. The attendant will take your luggage up to your room. The hotel is actually a little complex of a resort, with several separate buildings connected by tunnels and a beautifully landscaped garden. Several buildings are back along the perimeter of the garden without much if any sea view. Be sure to reserve a room in the main original old building with the four story tower, the restaurant, and the “beach” wooden platforms. The expense is well worth it for the lovely views and breezes. The hotel caters, like many in Istria, to Germans and Austrians which has its plusses and minuses. Pluses  the hotel is very clean and the housekeeping people work very hard  after several nights of not being able to sleep due to the extremely hard and uncomfortable mattress, I went to the reception desk to ask for four pillows so that might help mitigate the harsh mattress. The desk clerk was amazingly helpful and immediately asked if we would like them to put on a cushy mattress cover. Oh MY! I said Oh Yes that would be wonderful! And sure enough, they did and it was such an incredible difference and we were finally able to sleep. Minuses - We found it almost impossible to sleep and we were there for several nights. The bed is impossibly uncomfortable. The mattress is as hard as a stone slab, the sheets and pillowcases are extremely rough, the duvet is not large enough to cover even a very slim, moderately tall woman; and the pillows are hard and small. Sleeping was impossible due to the extreme discomfort of all aspects of the bed. See the “plus” above – they offered us a cushy mattress cover which made all the difference so we could finally sleep. - The AC does not work well enough to cool the room enough to be able to sleep. One of the most important factors in choosing this hotel and this specific suite was the individually controlled room AC, so we would not be stuck with centrally controlled hotel AC which is never ever cool enough and which hotels turn off at night which means that halfway through the night we wake up very hot. We told them about the AC several times. - When we once went to reception to ask them to fix the AC, the desk clerk was unacceptably rude without a hint of a customer servic

I am just wondering why I have found this gem so late:-) What a lovely place to relax and unwind. The staff does anything to keep you content. The room was fantastic, pools and beach just perfect and also the sauna experience was outstanding. The food was excellent. The hotel is just wonderful. I personally adore the historical city of Abbazia. I will come back.

With my soft spot for Austrian-Hungarian history, this was another delightful vacation of great value. The garden is so beautiful, it is a dream. Lovely and helpful staff. Love the cuisine, it is light and tasty. A new beach platform offers lounging direct at the sea without any shortage of chaises. I would prefer more comfortable chaises but this is a personal choice. The hotel is the best choice in Opatija and I will be back. It is home away from home.
