I have lived in Buenos Aires for many years but have not been to an estancia in ages so this weekend, I took a bus to San Antonio de Areco to have a day visit (dia de campo) at La Portena. What a day it was! Oscar, the gaucho (cowboy) picked me up from the town square to take me on a short 20 minute drive to the estancia. I arranged everything on WhatsApp and Catarina, who manages the reservations, was a pleasure to deal with - helping me arrange the transport and answer the millions of question I had. From the time I arrived until the time I departed, I had the best time. They have a number of horses you can ride, a refreshing pool (it was 99 degrees F today), and nonstop food. Upon arriving, I was welcomed with empanadas, chorizo, morcilla and wine! This was followed shortly after with a huge asado (BBQ) with chicken, beef, sausage and salad (and more wine!). I spent hours talking with the owner, Gonzales, and the time flew by. Before long, I had to say good bye for the two hour bus ride back to Buenos Aires. I will certainly return!
