I called the inn around 1500 on the day of our arrival (we were walking the Offa’s Dyke Path and were at Monmouth around 8 miles north of the property at the time) to enquire about what time they served food until. A lady answered and was very terse and unfriendly to the point I was obliged to ask if I’d somehow offended her to which she tersely and ironically said “No”! However, upon arrival the reception we received was more cordial; the room was clean but a bit faded and musty smelling and the bed very comfortable. The evening meal menu looked a little unimaginative and dull but one of the two specials of the day took my fancy - fish pie and veg - which pleasantly surprised us with its good quality, decent meal size and plenty of firm, fresh veg. The following morning’s breakfast was served by a very friendly and attentive lady and tasted good if consisting of standard fare and no fruit available.
