Casa du Lac, by R Collection Hotels

We booked a room for four nights at Casa du Lac in Varenna Lake Como. We arrived by train. Ai suggested a taxi after we arrived. No taxis were found. Walked an aggressive half mile to the hotel with our luggage in the heat. We found out it is free with our room but they didn’t mention that we we booked. We arrived sweaty and we’re told to wait in the lobby with out bags. So we sat in the ridiculously uncomfortable lobby chairs sweating for about 20 minutes until the front desk person finally returned. They take us to our room on the first floor which is about 10 feet from the lobby desk. The room is TINY!!!!! We barely had anywhere to put our luggage. The bathroom had a pedestal sink and zero space to put anything. The shower didn’t even have a place to put shampoo or conditioner so we had to put it on the ground. Also no hooks to hang anything. We tried to store our luggage in the tiny hutch, but the doors wouldn’t close. This becomes problematic at night since the hutch lights wouldn’t don’t go out. We were woken up to the busy lobby sounds and talking right outside our room at 6:00am. At over $1000 USD a night I highly recommend staying elsewhere.

WOW!! After a short train ride from Milan, my travel companion and I arrived to the quaint, charming town of Varenna. Spectacular views, just pure serenity!! Hotel du Lac is a small boutique hotel. We were welcomed by lovely employees who offered to make our stay, comfortable as possible. The rooms were clean, well appointed, tranquil, and had remarkable views of Lake Como. The location was perfect. A short (20-25 min) uphill walk from the train station. But, if you have a lot of bags don’t push it, call the hotel as they have a golf cart to shuttle you. Breakfast/use of the pool at there “sister hotel (Royal Victoria) is again, just a short 5 min walk from Hotel du Lac. There is no question we will be back!! Just a delightful experience! Thank you ALL!

We stayed at Hotel du Lac on Lake Como for three nights in August, paying almost €4,000 for a suite. At around €1,300 per night, we believe it is reasonable to expect an exceptional level of service, comfort and attention to detail. Unfortunately, our experience fell far short of those expectations. There is no question that the hotel benefits from a beautiful location and the charm of its surroundings. However, the reality of our stay was very different from the impression created by the photographs and the way the hotel presents itself. The restaurant situation was particularly disappointing. Breakfast had to be taken at the sister hotel. On our first evening, the restaurant was only open indoors; on the second day, it was completely closed; and on the third evening, we almost had to beg to get a table outside. When choosing a hotel on Lake Como for a romantic three-night stay, this is certainly not the experience one expects at this price level. The comfort of the room was equally surprising. The pillows were extraordinarily hard – almost like concrete – and unsuitable for either side or stomach sleepers. We genuinely woke up with neck pain. At €1,300 per night, providing a choice of pillows should be a basic standard rather than a luxury. There was also no turndown service on our first evening, and during our stay we were never asked whether we would like our bed linen changed. More generally, we missed all those small touches, attention to detail and proactive service that distinguish a truly special hotel from one that simply happens to occupy an exceptional location. This was particularly disappointing because we had deliberately chosen Hotel du Lac to spend a few romantic days together on Lake Como, and the expectations set by the Guest Management beforehand had suggested a very different experience. The location is undeniably beautiful. But location alone cannot justify almost €4,000 for three nights. At this level, guests should be able to expect considerably more in terms of service, comfort, hospitality and attention to detail. Sadly, we left very disappointed.

The hotel is so quaint but with excellent views. The staff was amazing! Alice the manager was helpful. In fact all of the staff were great. We will come again.

Fantastic stay at Casa Du Lac. Clean, spacious rooms, warm and attentive staff, and a location that's hard to beat. The breakfast buffet with its lake view was a real highlight, and the free shuttle to the train station was a nice touch. Would definitely stay again.

A Magical Stay in Varenna We travelled with our teenage daughter and chose to book two rooms: a Deluxe Room with Lake View and a Junior Suite with Balcony and Lake View. Both rooms were absolutely perfect. The Junior Suite was particularly special. It was spacious, beautifully presented, and the views across Lake Como were simply magical. Waking up to that scenery each morning was unforgettable. Breakfast is served at the sister hotel, the Royal Victoria, and the experience was genuinely five-star. We also enjoyed lunch and dinner there on separate days, and everything was exceptional. The lakeside setting is stunning, the food is excellent, and the service is warm, professional, and attentive. A special mention must go to Riccardo in the restaurant and bar, and Leonardo at the front desk. Both went above and beyond to ensure that our stay was completely faultless and made us feel incredibly welcome. Casa Du Lac is a wonderful place to stay in Varenna, combining beautiful rooms, breathtaking views, excellent dining, and outstanding service. We would return without hesitation and are already looking forward to visiting again.

We didn’t stay in the hotel but we did visit the restaurant which overlooked Lake Como. What a stunning vista to have whilst eating lunch. Our food was superb and we just couldn’t fault the service either. I wanted lobster that day and it didn’t disappoint - beautiful pasta with a very tasty tomato sauce which had lobster folded through it - plus a lobster tail laying on top. One of us had a mixed seafood risotto and found it very enjoyable and she’s a qualified chef… another had salmon, delicious and another ordered a pasta dish which she enjoyed immensely. We ordered Tiramisu (stunning dish) and strawberries and cream - once again delicious. The staff were very attentive and we left very happy and full.
