Let's be honest, there's not much reason for civilians to be in Waiouru except as a stop on a longer trip. No offense to the town, it's a perfectly nice little place, just not much to do there. I literally needed a place to sleep overnight before continuing on to Wellington. Easy to find. Grounds looked clean and well maintained. Plenty of parking, generous sizes and different configurations for trailers, large vehicles etc. Check in was good - staff friendly, got milk for in-room coffee the next morning. The free beer or cider was an nice, unexpected touch. Little table n chairs set outside each room, in good condition. Room itself was pretty basic, but good for the price you're paying. Mini fridge, microwave, tea/coffee stuff with cups and mugs. TV with heaps of Sky channels, a few lighting options, plenty of towels and pillows. Heat pump - didn't use it, but looked fine. A few power outlets but in kind of weird locations. Bathroom a bit tired, but very clean and totally functional. Not a lot of noise overnight. Is a couple of turns away from SH1 though, so big trucks rumbling past pretty consistently. Bed was super comfy and plenty warm enough for spring. Check out was dropping a key in a box. Great stay, highly recommended for the price range.
