Just returned from a cheeky few days Fly Fishing and it was simply sublime . Thanks to Nigel the owner and his staff for making it so memorable. Fabulous laid back atmosphere throughout our stay and for Nigel’s patience when teaching us the art of Fly Fishing . Food , in particular the brekkie was excellent . Thanks again for making it such a great trip Peter , Chris & Michael

A little gem of a hotel, prime situation in Appleby, extremely friendly staff, excellent food and a lovely comfortable bed. We stayed for a long weekend intending to partake in the fly fishing tuition that the hotel offers but unfortunately the weather had other ideas. Stayed in a lovely large suite and yes some may say it’s a bit rough round the edges but for us that was part of the charm. Will definitely be back.

This is the second time we have stayed here and both times have been a very enjoyable experience. The first time we were upgraded to a suite, and this was luxurious, a very spacious sitting area with comfortable settees and overlooking the market square through elegant bow windows. The next time we were also upgraded to another spacious and elegant room. The breakfasts were cooked to order and had an extensive menu. The dinners were again freshly cooked with local produce and a ver good choice of starters, mains and deserts. Thoroughly relaxing and enjoyable retreat.

We visited the on-site cafe which we were disappointed with. Even though the menu is limited they had run out of several items. The corridor to the toilets were covered in cobwebs and the building itself needs a major refurbishment

This is an 'old school' hotel. It is not a concrete block, it has character and charm that is often lost in today's vacations. I attended an event in the area and stayed with Nigel and the team. I could not have been more looked after. The food was fantastic, the staff was so helpful, Lynne on reception and the other staff, could not have been more accommodating. The breakfast was huge and kept me going all day. I found it peaceful and restful, it's history is clearly evident. I have made an honest evaluation of a character and historical hotel. Situated in the heart of Appleby and is ideal for a vacation. Thank you so much for looking after me. I will definitely be returning.

We have just spent a few days at the Tufton Arms with friends and had a wonderful time. The rooms in the main hotel are beautifully decorated and furnished in a traditional style in keeping with the hotels location. The food is excellent with imaginative menus and a rare combination of lovely presentation and flavour , but with generous portion sizes as well. But the hotels greatest assets are its staff, who could not have been more helpful, So a big Thank You to Nigel and his brother (the chef) , Lynn and all the others.

This hotel has the presence and location in the centre of Appleby to be an outstanding hotel but it is lacking the investment needed to bring it up to the standard any reasonable traveller paying the price they charge for the rooms expects. The hotel is tired, the decor is poor, linens and towel worn out, beds lacking any support - the list goes on. We stayed there for a fly fishing break. The fly fishing was excellent, such a great day with an amazing teacher, Trevor. Nigel who owns the hotel was also lovely as we’re his staff and the breakfast and evening meal couldn’t be faulted but modernisation is desperately needed. Appleby is one of the most friendliest and picturesque places, we’ll be back but sadly won’t be staying at the hotel unless investment is made.

We booked a two night stay in one of the apartments but were very disappointed with the cleanliness/condition of the property and we were moved to a room in the hotel where we stayed for one night then moved somewhere else in Appleby-in-Westmorland. Such a shame really, but the hotel would benefit from an extensive refurb. The staff are very helpful. Can’t comment on the food as we didn’t eat here.

Went for a meal for my daughters birthday not happy with plastic tablecloth’s and waited over one hour for our meal that was poor quality the hotel was empty no excuse just a shame as not much else in Appleby, maybe not place so much on selling your wine but selling your hotel
