YHA Grinton Lodge

Excellent value. The rooms, loos and showers are spotlessly clean. Loads of hot water. Staff very friendly and helpful. A good, basic menu for dinner with wholesome food in good quantity. Breakfast was outstanding.

Booked a one night stay for myself and my daughter in the sale. Been wanting to visit her for a while and this seemed like a good opportunity. After a day walking the dales in the snow we made our way to the hostel which has a great location in some amazing scenery. Check in was quick and easy but given the small car being made even smaller due to snow drifts we parked outside on the road. Our room was fresh and clean and newly decorated. Facilities were good. We made use of the self catering kitchen for both evening meal and breakfast. Shame one of the two ovens was out of order as this did cause a queue. Lounge was comfy and in the morning had great views across the valley. Dry room was decent and took the edge off my sodden boots. Plenty of outside cabins and I tip my hat to the people doing a BBQ in the snow. That was some commitment shown. All in all a good stay.

Gorgeous views , beautiful countryside purple Heather moorland, sheep and very peaceful place. The hostel itself needs money spent on it, no fault of the welcoming and hard working staff. Our room had mould on the walls and we were given another room, more comfortable. Everywhere seems run down, paint peeling, botched repairs, ****s all around, but guests are happy, nice atmosphere and nice warm rooms, hot water and comfy beds. Outdoor table tennis was popular with families but no other games or leisure facilities apart from a lounge with seating. Good kitchen to cook in. Hope to sample some of the cooking next time.

Excellent value Helpful and friendly staff. Who made sure we got food ordered in time. The food was delicious and reasonably priced - in particular yhe breakfast Room clean and comfortable. Beautiful settings. No need to go to the pub in the evening!

My friend and I managed to secure accommodation on the day we needed it, we had not booked in advance. Also, we were able to upgrade to a private room at check in. Staff were friendly, clean facilities and good value for money. However check in time is 5pm, a bit late but we sat in the lounge which was open. We made good use of the drying room, and washing machine. Ate in the restaurant which was lovely and the food was delicious. An excellent over night stop for anyone completing the Herriot Way long distance walk, it’s on the route .

We only stayed one night, but wished we could have stayed longer. We chose a private en-suite room, which was clean and comfortable with an outstanding view. The breakfast buffet in the morning was varied and good value for money. The staff were friendly and helpful and allowed us to check-in early, which was much appreciated. Overall an excellent stay in a hostel full of character and we will definitely return.

Great camping experience with stunning views. Check in was really easy and the lady who checked us in was really friendly and showed us round all the facilities and where to camp etc. Lots of toilets and showers to use and several lounges and kitchens which was great when it rained. Good selection of bottles from the bar and a large choice at breakfast. Would recommend a stay here in the future and I think we’ll be back!

A quite beautiful building with great facilities for a camping stop on the Coast to Coast. The last half mile from the river felt a little brutal, but it was worth it. The Youth Hostel had everything you need, including kitchen and eating area, drying room, cafe area and a marvellous lounge space. The kitchen felt a little small if there were lot of people there, but as it was just me it was fine. The field to pitch the tent was flat with a beautiful vista down Swaledale. It might be a bit exposed if the weather doesn't behave, but it wasn't an issue on this occasion. Showers were outstanding. Staff were really helpful. Some great info about the area on the walls in the hostel. Good Wifi coverage inside the hostel and easy to find somewhere to charge the phone. Gentle roll down the hill to the local pub and small climb back again to work off the pint. Easier without the backpack. Would be easy to return and explore the Dales off the C2C path. The camping pods looked pretty welcoming too.

I was unsure about camping at a youth hostel because I like basic camping but this stay was a gamechanger. The fact we could access the full facilities of the hostel did not in any way compromise the camping experience. We stayed there over the May bank holiday weekend (4 nights) We had a random chicken running around the site along with multiple sheep. Birdsong was everywhere and the views are stunning. The self service kitchens (2) at the hostel and access to electricity were very useful. We also tried their breakfast and evening food, along with accessing the bar and ice cream shop. We are just booking another trip for August.
