Wow - we were driving round the Castleton loop and decided lunch was in order. We came upon this pub and looked at the menu to see if they did a ploughnmans and yes they did ! Well this is most probably the best ploughmans we have ever had and we have tried a few. The ham moist and thick, the pork pie just amazing the cheese just perfect and the platter just went on with superb chutney and coleslaw and the bread served with it was so fresh and crusty and tasty. all in all just brilliant. The landlord and serving staff were also great hosts. Thank you.

I’ve never written a bad review for anywhere before but I feel strongly that this establishment is one to avoid. We visited the Cheshire Cheese Inn after walking up Mam Tor this afternoon. We sat outside for a short while for a drink whilst we waited for our indoor table booking - we enjoyed a drink in the beer garden. Unfortunately, our meal was below standard to say the least. 3 of the meals arrived and then we waited another 10 minutes for the 4th meal to arrive - not a great start but we could see staff were busy so we could understand. 2 of our party ordered the pork roast dinner and although the meat was ok, the veg was frozen from a packet, as were the roast potatoes. We also had cauliflower cheese but it had literally no cheese on it - not fantastic when the name of the pub literally references cheese! Another member of the group had the steak and ale pie which was incredibly dry as it had no gravy at all within it. The worst meal of the 4 was the burger which had not been flipped and was therefore charcoaled on one side and pink on the other. It was also literally just a cheap white bread bun and a slab of meat inside; no butter, lettuce, tomato, relish or anything. You could have mistaken it for a burger bought at a football match. £16 for this was astonishingly overpriced. The chips were also very undercooked. The table next to us had been waiting 40 minutes for their pudding and had asked for their bill as they were fed up of waiting - another unhappy customer. And the table behind us had asked to speak to the manager (who was really horrendously rude to them) as they had ordered a child’s roast and an adults roast and the adults portion had no more than the child’s but was double the price. The attitude and bitterness of the landlady towards this family was extremely uncomfortable for everybody in the room to witness. She also stated that “today had been hell for them” which isn’t a great message to be sending out to paying customers. One waitress looked like she was crying and we were sat next to the kitchen so could hear the landlady/manager shouting at the young staff when they came into the kitchen to tell her some tables needed her/had a complaint. Again really uncomfortable to witness young members of staff being put under pressure like that. Nobody came to check back on us to see how our food was/had been so we didn’t have the opportunity to raise this with staff whilst we were eating. Once we had finished we waited for a member of staff to clear plates and ask how the food had been and raise that we had some concerns but nobody came so we went to the bar, paid and left. All in all, not a great experience. Maybe the management should consider streamlining the menu so they can focus on quality food or maybe serving only drinks outside so that they aren’t stretched as thin.

I stumbled upon this accommodation when searching for something cosy in the Peak District and was encouraged to book a 2-night stay due to the positive reviews. The super king room was clean, a good size & had all the amenities you would expect in a B&B. My partner could not get over how comfortable the bed was and raved about it at numerous points over the weekend! We had drinks and an evening meal in the pub both nights and were pleasantly surprised at the freshness of the produce and standard of the cooking. The pub is rustic and seems to suddenly clear at a very reasonable hour so there was no danger of our sleep being affected by downstairs noise during our stay. The pub is on a fairly busy road, however, and cars pass by in the early morning so that may not suit you if you’re a light sleeper wanting a lie-in. We wanted to get up and get walking so it wasn’t really a problem for us. Breakfast was freshly cooked, piping hot and really tasty, with good coffee. Laura, the owner, even managed to remain gracious when I revealed I had accidentally chucked coffee grounds on the floor in the bedroom. I blame the previous night’s Malbecs! The Cheshire Cheese Inn comes with a glowing endorsement & lots of gratitude to all the staff for our pleasant stay.

We booked a table for Sunday roast with 4 adults and I wrote a note saying we had 2 small dogs. On arrival we were shown to a table by a very unfriendly man. We took our coats and bags and hung them on hooks behind our seats. As the table was situated in middle of room i settled the two dogs on a blanket I had bought for them at one end of the table. The same very unfriendly man came along and said could I move the dogs as he didn't like dogs. Why would you run a dog friendly pub if you don't like dogs. He then proceeded to throw my rucksack that he knocked off hooks. When he returned to take our orders we informed him we would not be staying due to feeling very unwelcome by him. He was extremely rude to us and then proceeded to stand out the back and slag us off. We visit castleton and the hope Valley regularly but will not be returning to this pub again

Visited the Cheshire Cheese Inn for a Sunday lunch, and I must say it’s the best roast dinner I’ve had in Sheffield for a very long time. Delicious food, lovely atmosphere, warm fire and great hospitality. A real hidden gem! We’ll definitely be back :)

My wife and I booked a table in advance and dined there. We had a table for two alonside a wall but two out of three tables aajacent to us had dogs. Were were subject to four dogs as we ate. After the meal my wife informed me that one of the dogs licked her hand repeatedly but she did not complain - not wanting cause trouble. Another dog was very restless and the onwer was repeatedly pulling it back on a lead and telling it to be quiet. The Cheshire Cheese is a great pub if you like eating in a kennel. Frank

Arrived for late lunchtime just after 2pm after a long strenuous walk. Fairly busy as we guessed it may be on a sunny Sunday after a very wet week with flooding where we live. We know the food is excellent and we met the lovely chef a couple of weeks ago and enjoyed open sandwiches in the garden served by her even though she was short staffed that day. However on Sunday, the chap serving behind the bar was rude and had a poor customer relations manner. Most Tables were reserved, but not all of them, also plenty of seating outside but he refused to even let us buy a sandwich to take outside and eat with our pint. Certainly this place then doesn’t hold to the hold to the old rules of inns as a hostelry for tired folk travelling through. I certainly will never go here again on a weekend even though I’ve been visiting this inn for 40 plus years, and if I go in and find the same chap there next time I’ll be walking straight out the door, plenty of other places round about where the staff are friendly and accommodating as Derbyshire folk usually are.

The food was so delicious in the place that my husband and I came back for lunch the next day before we continued our UK road trip. Service is warm, friendly and proficient. I highly recommend the veggie Wellington! The vegan and vegetarian options are second to none. Definitely stop by in this little English gem if you're passing by for lunch or dinner!!!

Visited this evening with friends as a recommendation. Our table booked for 6.30 was clean and available. Drinks can only be ordered at the bar and whilst there were three staff behind the bar only one appeared to be serving very slowly. Back at the table we ordered food. Two of their freshly made pies (takes 30 minutes to cook) one fish and chips and one lamb of the day at £23. The food duly arrived after half an hour, we asked for some more drinks but we were informed that drinks could only be ordered at the bar meaning either eating your meal with no drink or letting food go cold whilst waiting to get drinks at the bar. This is ludicrous, one pint could have easily been added to the food bill. Fish and chips ok, one steak pie ok. The other steak pie was covered with uncooked pastry. The very expensive lamb dish (£23) was disappointing, lamb overcooked, not a hint of pink as asked for when ordering, parsnips undercooked and ok potato dauphinois. No one returned to ask if the food was ok. Once we finished our meal no one came to clear the table. After 30 minutes we asked for the table to be cleared, only then were we asked if the food was ok, a little late to resolve any issues!! As an additional comment I would say there were several young staff hanging around out of sight, seemingly untrained and under motivated. The menu is too large and should be cut down to what the kitchen staff can actually cope with. The food prices are greater than the quality of food delivered. Unfortunately we will not be returning or recommending.
