We spent a week in Montepulciano at Vicolo dell’Oste, and it was the best part of our month in Tuscany and Rome. First of all, Montepulciano is a fabulous hilltop town, well situated for day trips to villages and wineries in the region. The town is located on an incline, and I was concerned whether my knees and some problems with balance would make this too challenging for me. I had cortisone injections in my knees before leaving, and I used trekking poles for stability, and I really managed it quite well and was delighted to be there! If your physical limitations are more severe, this probably won’t be a good match. Second, the Vicolo dell’Oste was a wonderful home base! It is in a very charming old building, on the corner of a quiet side street and the main street (mostly pedestrian traffic), and it’s close to the flattest part of the hill climb. There are shops, restaurants, and cafes everywhere (even a laundromat). The apartment we had was on the second floor (third in U.S. parlance) and included a spacious sitting area with a kitchenette (no oven but stovetop, refrigerator, sink), large bedroom, and en-suite bathroom. It was much more than we expected! The one downside was that the lighting, especially in the sitting room, is very dim. If you’re watching TV, it’s probably fine, but we are readers, and there just wasn’t enough light for us to do that comfortably. Everything else was stellar! This was the most expensive accommodation of our trip at €105/night—but, when you consider the large breakfast for two that is included, it really came out comparable in price. Breakfast at the Café Poliziano across the street included juice, coffee/tea, pastries, hot egg choice, fruit, yogurt, toast, from which to choose each day, all served either on a terrace with an amazing view or in the historic interior. Best of all, Luisa and Giuseppe are amazingly attentive hosts. Each morning of our stay, Luisa was at the front desk and checked with us on any help we needed with plans or reservations for the day. She recommended several really wonderful restaurants, made reservations for us, and gave us tips for our excursions. She was helpful above and beyond! While we were offered, and tried out, one of the hotel parking spaces inside the walls, we opted to park in one of the free lots outside the walls (thereby entailing a bit of a hike into the center) because of the challenge of driving the narrow, mostly pedestrian, often one-way lanes inside! If I go back to Montepulciano or if a friend asks for a recommendation, I would, without hesitation, recommend Vicolo dell’Oste!
