The Rifle Volunteer

Stayed a few times before. Best stay yet. Beds are so comfy and rooms well kept and comfy. Friendly landlord Nigel and made very welcome. Don’t expect a cooked breakfast or frills like that. This is a well priced pub stay with lots of breakfast buffet bits and you can fill your boots. Easy walking distance to lovely Ware high street and the pubs on the river.

We held our son’s christening at this pub and the owner and staff could not do enough for us on the day and the lead up! After looking at many pub venues in Ware town centre this pub was by far the best option for a private event. The owner Nigel was so accommodating and could not do enough for us! He even gave us a bottle of champagne at the end of the night. It’s a perfect venue for a private/ intimate function, we comfortably had 60 people and the outside is secure for kids to run around (astroturfed too). Also, a couple of our friends stayed in the B&B overnight and they had a lovely sleep and great breakfast. I can also confirm their Pizza’s are super tasty too! Overall I can’t recommend enough and look forward to hosting our next event there in the near future!

The Rifle Volunteer has an interesting history. It was just right for my grandson's stay as he completed a training course at the local leisure centre. Very clean and comfortable. We all enjoyed a pizza in this traditional pub. Lovely staff.

A stay at The Rifle Volunteer was not as bad as you might be led to believe by some reviews. The view consisted of car park rather than Hanging Gardens of Babylon or herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically across the plain. Accommodation was very basic and staffing levels in the day were low. However, at £60 for a single room it was perfectly acceptable. Staff were friendly and helpful. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for.

The staff were warm and friendly and the self service breakfast was quite pleasant. However the room: Unwelcoming, dreary, sparse, depressing; poorly painted in an all-over sharp white. Broken fixtures and fittings which included the window blinds and the corners of drawers!!! Bedding which was basic and not warm enough. (To his credit the owner did provide an extra throw but this was still insufficient.) One glaring light fitting which knocked and swung against the bathroom door each time i went in to shower or use the toilet. I had to use an extra towel to stem the flow of water on to the floor each time I showered. I was not expecting high-end luxury for £60/ night but there should have been a sense of warmth and comfort.

Good continental breakfast but that's the only thing that is good. Noisy rooms, poorly maintained, felt grubby Loud music playing in pub past midnight Wouldn't even reach a 1 star Don't bother, never again
