Excellent stay in this traditional family run Ryokan. The room was very big, we enjoyed the three onsen on offer. The breakfast was so tasty as is the dinner. The hotel is very close to the local train and bus station for snow monkey park as well as ski area. Book in advance as very popular!

Fantastic traditional Japanese accomodation. Very quiet and relaxing place to stay. Access to 3 amazing onsens which we loved. Traditional dinner and breakfast was delicious and made the experience even better! Very helpful staff. Coffee machine fabulous!

Beautifully kept and friendly ryokan. The owners were extremely hospitable, and immediately offered to drive us up to the snow monkey park (and helpfully gave us a list of the bus times for getting back!). Dinner was superb and they accommodated our vegan requirements with no issue (but please make sure to ask in advance). We got a list of dietary requirements when we arrived to tick yes/no to for extra peace of mind. Our beds were comfortable, and the private onsen was lovely too. A great rest stop!

My husband had amazing ryokan stays in an amazing trip to Magome a few years ago, but with a 1.5 year old we weren’t sure how recreate that experience for ourselves while keeping the little one happy. Aiming to see the snow monkeys, we booked a private room with bathroom but without onsen for one night. Firstly, the hotel is VERY convenient if you arrive by train. It is literally a 2 minute walk to the station, so you can make the most of your time in Yudanaka. It’s also convenient as the Snow Monkey bus stops thetr When we arrived at 14.00, we were lucky and were immediately able to go to our room. Which was enormous! It was upstairs, and was the size of our apartment in London. One area was already set for sleeping, and the other area had tea set up for us. The hosts, staff, and some guests we encountered were all also very excited to interact with our son! We wanted to see the snow monkeys immediately on arrival (the park closes at 16h). Our host was a bit surprised we wanted to leave so soon, but very kindly offered to drive us to the park himself, and drove us right up to the gate. After a pleasant time seeing the monkeys, we returned back via bus. Very convenient 2 minute walk from the bus again! We had dinner at 6 in our own private dining room. The goons was all phenomenal, but the melt-in-your-mouth beef and smoky soup particularly stood out. We fed our 1 year old some of the food complemented by a baby ready meal. We used both the family onsen (no need to book - very pleasant inside onsen) and my husband and I then enjoyed the outdoor onsen. Which is gorgeous! When I went (women’s hours were from around 19h- 22h, with the rest of the time for men). I was the only user. It was magical with the steam coming off the water. It looks like the postcards that make you dream about onsen. When my husband went, it was snowing! And one other user (at 7am) We both had a very relaxing sleep. We felt sufficiently far from others that we didn’t feel too worried about the baby crying. Im the morning another lovely breakfast, and the staff were kind enough to heat up some porridge for our son! Overall, it was a really perfect stay.

This is my second stay in this lovely ryokan, and it was as magical as the first. Matsuo, the owner, is a friendly and welcoming host, who speaks English and is ready to explain anything you need and the staff are wonderful. Matsuo will drive you to the bottom of the Snow Monkey park (the rest is on foot through a lush hill). Our meals were served in a dining room just for us, and the food was a visual and gastronomic feast. We stayed in the largest room, which has its own en-suite. The ryokan has 3 hot baths, I strongly recommend trying the one outdoors: there’s something poetic about sitting in the hot pool, while rain drizzles and steam rises.

We stayed here for a night in the middle of March and had the best time. The onsen is very close to Yudanaka Station so was very easy to find. It was a very nice looking place. They had the most beautiful pond and garden outside. When we arrived the owner asked us if we were going to see the snow monkeys and he offered to drive us up there, which was very much appreciated. After our visit to the monkeys we went back and they had cooked us the most wonderful vegan sushi. Honestly the food was amazing. Their hospitality was exceptional. We also tried the private onsen, on account of having tattoos. It was so nice. Hot, but not too hot for me. Breakfast was again just amazing. We would have liked to stayed longer, so will defintely consider going back. We want to thank you for such a nice time. I highly recommend. Staff were friendly and the service was great.

A completely different and a more authentic Japanese experience. We had the pleasure of staying for two nights. We were there to visit the monkey park and experience the Japanese Hot Springs. Family owned and operated. They will happily pick you up from the train station upon arrival and will drop you at the entrance of the monkey park. A convenient public transit option is available at nominal cost. $5.00 CDN. The bus will return you to the train station and then it is less than 3 minutes walk to the Ryokan. Upon arrival, we are instructed to remove our shoes and put on their house slippers. It is cold in the general areas in winter time. However each room has an individual heater that will give plenty of warmth. Dinner and Breakfast are served in a seperate dining room. Forget having a western breakfast. Your breakfast will be japanese style, that will have rice, grilled fish, a fried egg, plus many other typical Japanese accompaniments. The dinner is a Japanese kaiseki style meal. Plenty of grilled fish., beef, rice, soup, pickles, fresh Japanese vegetables. The owners will try their very best to feed you well taking into account your dislikes. Keep an open mind. Everything is in small portions, so you can find enough to fill yourself and be satisfied. Very little english is spoken. However, it is very easy to learn a few basic phrases before your trip to Asia. I found that making an effort to communicate in Japanese is a sign of respect to your host, in his home just as their attempts to communicate in limited English (my native tongue)to my wife and I. The ryokan is very rustic. Some areas of the inn could use some fresh carpet, as areas look worn and in need of replacement. Thats my only negative comment. My wife and I took advantage of the private onsen. It was available on a first come first served basis. Both evenings we were able to secure time alone. Their is a public mens and public womens bath available as well. We discovered upon getting out of the onsen our 2nd and last night was a seperate tap that could be turned on to cool the onsen down. We wish we knew this beforehand. This was our first time using an onsen. It is way hotter than we expected. Getting in after taking our shower to soap up and clean off was causing my wife and I to giggle as we tried to acclimatize the "naughty bits." Once we were acclimatized, we were able to have a good 30 minute bath in the onsen. After getting out and dressed in our Yukatas for dinner, The chilly temperatures of the chilly/unheated area didnt even bother us. Our bodies had been restored and were now ready for a good nights sleep. The family will go out of their way to take care of you from arrival to departure. On the morning of our departure, the owner loaded up our luggage and drove us back to the Yudenaka train station for our on going journey to Kyoto. Arigato Yudenaka Onsen Seifuso.! Arigato gozaimusu! (I might have the spelling of the 2nd word w

A wonderful experience. There are three onsen, two of which are public and can only be used by one gender at a time, and one that locks from the inside for private use (for couples etc). The real star is the outdoor onsen. I used it alone in the morning after breakfast during gentle snowfall and it’s one of my favourite places on earth. The meals are beautiful, both dinner and breakfast consisting of many beautifully presented small plates of various delicious Japanese foods. My girlfriend eats fish but not meat, and they were eager to cater to her requirements, and can also do vegetarian friendly meals. The friendly staff also gave us a lift to the snow monkey park (which is amazing- must visit while in Japan) the day we arrived and showed us where and when to get the bus back from there. Everything from the traditional meals to the traditional rooms to the incredible onsen left us feeling serene and relaxed and light. Fantastic way to experience the Japanese aesthetic and the sense of serenity that this country does so well. The location is also fantastic, being a 2 minute walk to Yudanaka station is incredibly convenient. Also easy to stop off at Shibu Onsen for a quick explore after visiting the Snow Monkey Park, before jumping back on the bus to go back to the station.
