Yes, our front Sanctuary area (which is situated beyond our existing gardens, and which is more of a 'wild area') was, in the old days, a place for injured/ rescued animals to reside, often after veterinary surgery. In our current improvement project, we are developing walkways into this section, and planting bird- and insect-attracting trees and plants, in an effort to restore this area and provide a beautiful place for our guests to enjoy a meandering nature walk. We have moved our herd of water buffalo and our donkey and two zonkeys, to the back of our property, but they will still be clearly visible from this new Sanctuary area. With regards to venturing out of our property: we are situated off a road that leads to the nearby town of Usa River, complete with its lively market selling all manner of household goods, clothing and fresh produce; public transport depot; and indeed an opportunity to experience local culture. The Lodge offers a free walking excursion with a Swahili- and English-speaking guide. We are finding that these outings are proving more and more popular with our guests who wish to explore the local scene. And yes, should one wish to travel further afield, such as into the centre of Arusha, one would need to hire a vehicle for self-drive, or a taxi driver, both of which we can help to arrange. As you experienced, with our location being 30 minutes from Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and around 40 mins from Arusha City Centre, we are a convenient stopover point for visitors recently arrived in the country needing a restful place to catch their breath before setting off on the northern circuit safari.
