Our family group of 7 had originally planned a reunion stay in Builth Wells, but because of a problem with accommodation we were obliged to look elsewhere. However, we considered it fortunate when we were able to secure 4 double rooms each with their own private bathroom at the Castle Hotel. Being in the Brecons it seemed to be a good alternative. A warm welcome from Ian the helpful owner made a favourable first impression, and the comfortable, clean, spacious bedrooms, fulfilled our expectations. Each room was well equipped with a tv, hospitality tray and toiletries, and we were all able to enjoy a comfortable night's rest. Continental breakfast was included in the room rate and free car parking completed the picture. The only slight minus being the windy narrow stairs; although we were fully aware of this at the time of booking two of our group having mobility issues were able to manage satisfactorily. This did not detract from what was a very pleasant stay. We would be happy to visit again at some future date.

I had a really nice stay at The Castel Hotel. Everything was well organised and comfortable. The owner Ian was really friendly and we had a good chat over Breakfast. Talgarth is a nice little village with a lovely little pub, The Bridge End Inn, friendly people and warm fire.

We stayed in the family room, which was clean and warm. The temperature got down to -3, but we were snug and warm in the room. The room also had a sofa and kitchen area as well as two bathrooms. The staff were friendly too. Would definitely recommend as a base for Hay-on-Wye.

A dive of a hotel, avoid at all costs. Stayed here for business and the room was run down, dirty and full of insects. Draught beers certainly weren't what they were being advertised as either and tasted horrendous. I suggest trading standards visit this place to investigate.

Stayed in Talgarth with family and went into the Castle for Dinner. There is a message on the front of the pub that advises “a very warm welcome”. The attitude from the young barman was bad from the start, I felt like I insulted him by asking if any spare tables, no warm welcome or any kind of welcome at all. Ordered drinks and he continued to be rude, so we had the drink and left. Was clear he didn’t want us there. Service at Bridge End Inn is amazing and very welcoming so I’d recommend going there instead.

This place is such value for money! Accompanied by friendly accommodating staff. Comfortable beds , wonderful bath, lovely soft towels and a very generous breakfast . Would definitely stay again - thank you so much castle hotel ! And our dog loved it too !

After reading reviews we didn’t expect much from this hotel. Upon arrival - at 4pm- we parked in their small car park (one of the only positives) and walked into a very dark food/ bar area. A young man greeted us, as did the overwhelming stench of fish. He explained about breakfast and then gave us our key and led us up dirty stairs to our room. Thankfully, the fish smell stayed downstairs but was replaced by a damp, stale smell in the room. The room (room 3) was large but very dirty. Thick cobwebs hung around the room with a few spiders. The bath was very dirty and the bath mat was gross. Neither myself or my partner walked on the carpet/ floor barefoot as we didn’t want our feet to get dirty. The bed was okay, the pillows were quite flat. We kept the window open all night to let the smell out so were quite cold! We opted not to have breakfast after seeing (the night before) that the cereal boxes were open and one was out of date. The toaster was really dirty too. One other positive would be the location- Talgarth is small and has a few shops/ pubs (none of which we went in because we arrived on a Sunday! But they looked lovely) We did not speak to any staff at the hotel as we only stayed for one night so didn’t see the point. I would not recommend staying at this hotel and would absolutely not go back.

This hotel looks nothing like the photos on their website. It was covered in grime, cobwebs, and spiders, and there was a lot of mold in the bathroom. I took videos and brought this to the owner's attention, but never received a response. They also charged my card prior to my arrival and this is a violation of their own booking policy, which the owner admitted to me shouldn't have happened. I asked for a refund as I felt this was not at all what I was promised when I booked, but after no response, I went through my bank for a refund, which I was granted. This hotel then charged my card AGAIN weeks later, and I was forced to cancel that card and get a new one. They've never responded to any of my emails, and I find this outright unprofessional.
