My husband Michael and I had checked in at Villa Cornarea the day before and had enjoyed a beautiful evening in the village of Canale. The next morning my husband went for an early morning walk in the vineyards and then it happened. His heart suddenly stopped, and he fell over. Luckily it happened outside the Villa and the Gardner Imran found him and called for help. Miraculously (I still can’t believe it) - some Danish doctors and their friends stayed at the Villa as guests, and they performed first aid until the ambulance and helicopter arrived. They succeeded to kickstart his heart and took him to a hospital 80 km away. I was left behind – in shock and completely unable to do anything. But then came Loredana, the manager of the villa. I can’t remember half of what she did for me in the days to come, but here’s some of it: She drove me to the hospital and didn’t leave my side. She gave the best and most positive pep talks, that kept my spirit and hopes up. She arranged food when I couldn’t eat – made me eat a little bit anyway - and encouraged me to sleep. She helped with communication to the hospital, arranged taxis to get me to the hospital and back. She cared for my brother who came to my rescue. She took time to sit in the sofa, hold my hand and listen. She was a true angel - and I’ll never be able to thank her, the Danish doctors, Imran and Chiara – enough. I’m forever thankful for all they did for us – and it’s because of them, that my husband is still alive today! You may wonder why I didn’t move to a hotel closer to the hospital, because it was a long way to go back and forth. But the answer is very simple: I felt so safe in the hands of Loredana and her team. In a time where everything around me was hard to cope with, Villa Cornarea became a safe haven. You may also wonder if we would go back to the place, where it all happened – and the answer is a big YES! I’ve promised Loredana and Chiara that we will return next year. To celebrate life! All the best from Mia & Michael, Copenhagen
