Sovereign Suites is a unique property with lots of pluses. All the staff members are cordial and housekeeping did a great job. However, a special mention must go to Chef Juan, who got up early one morning and packed breakfast to go for my husband, who had an early offsite meeting. As for the property itself, it is a colonial-era mansion that has been converted into a boutique hotel, and the fact that it used to be an opulent private residence adds to its charm. The guest rooms are spacious and the bathrooms are huge. However, maintaining a grand old house presents maintenance challenges and in some respects Sovereign Suites is showing signs of wear. Also, the gym was a real disappoin**ent because it was not well equipped. Making up for it, I suppose, is the fact that one can play miniature golf on the back side of the property, although I recommend insect repellent to do so. My biggest concern was that the property has no air conditioning, and because I am used to sleeping in a cold room, this made my stay a little less comfortable than I had hoped. Another issue is that the wifi didn't work in our room, although it worked well in the sitting area just outside of our room, and I didn't mind going there when I wanted to get online. As for the food, it was mainly good, but being a small hotel, the menu is limited. Breakfast each morning on the verandah was a definite treat, and as for other meals, the dishes I had were mostly good. Overall, I wouldn't say that Sovereign Suites is a true five-star hotel as some booking websites indicate. I would say it is more of a one-of-a-kind four to four-and-a-half star property.
