great rooms comfy beds, poor lighting for women's makeup, staff need 'welcome training' - rooms could do with a glass to house your toothbrush. all round a great central venue for Newbury evening nightlife. our second visit and would consider returning again.

Nice place, good staff, ridiculous prices, one large one small wine £19! As a local you have lost my custom, I can buy two bottles for that and have some change. I am sure you get a great mark up, make less and people will visit more often = greater profit, simple!

I had the best experience at the Elephant at the Market every one was so nice to me beer was good staff was brilliant with me and made me feel at ease and very calm I suffer from major mental health problems which I kept to myself but I couldn't rate this hotel and pub higher thank you so much Matt

This is a hard review to write. We stayed one night with our granddaughter in a family room. The room itself was warm and comfortable and the staff were very friendly. We didn't eat at the hotel but had a drink before going up to our room. It was a Friday night and the room was above the bar and faced the market square. It was simply the noisiest and most disturbed night that we have ever spent in any hotel and we will certainly never return. When booking the room I do not recall seeing any warning about the noise. Once I sat down with the little pack provided by the hotel I saw the warning and the offer of earplugs. That should have been enough of a warning. But nothing prepared us for the shouting, screaming and swearing that continued through to around 2 am. I tried to shut the windows but without success. I reported this to reception in the morning and they said they would look into it. It looked to me as though the windows were screwed open. The reception team asked us about our stay on checkout and when I said about the noise. It would seem that we should have expected this because of the very central location of the hotels. If you are planning on being one of the late night revellers this hotel will be perfect for you. if you want a good night's sleep do not stay here. A real shame as I think this hotel and bar has a lot to offer by way of its central location, car parking, friendliness of its staff and basic facilities.

The hotel has the potential to be amazing but needs some tlc. Our room had evidence of damp damage, poor decor, blinds that were hanging onto their fixings and a mirror that had fallen off the wall. However the room was comfy and spacious and the breakfast excellent

Popped in for drinks on a Thursday afteroon. It was very dark, gloomy and quiet inside so as the sun was shining we sat outside in a section roped off on the market square. Very pleasant. Service was good.

No words! £172 for 2 nights & put in the annex. 1st room Cornelius only to find stains over the bedding. Spoke to reception. Who apologized, given options for other annex, Madame room looked ok until we got in, dust, cobwebs, dirty toilet, bodily fluids on the bathroom tiles, wonky sink tap! The list is endless! Sack the cleaner or sort it out seriously!

My Daughter and I stayed here for one night, before visiting Highclere Castle the next day. At first glance our room looked nice, but then afterwards it looked more shabby than chique. The door closing system has caused a hole in the wall. There is paint on the lamp shades and paint is coming off the wardrobe and chest of drawers. The light in the bathroom wasn't working and the toilet seat was loose. We asked for this to be rectified twice! In addition to this, there was marks in the bath tub from a previously used mat of which was not cleaned away. Later we decided to open the window, where we then found a lot of disgusting cobwebs and dust above the window and blind area. This was the same for the radiator and the back of the TV. It seemed almost like the bed had only been cleaned and changed! The welcome pack states that EAR PLUGS are included in the room. We did not find any, so we phoned the hotel by using an online phone number because there is no hotel room service to ask for some ear plugs. We discovered through the phone call that the hotel had run out of Ear Plugs. So we did not sleep well at all due to the noise from the hotel as it is also a pub and closes till late hours. We thought breakfast was included in the price, but unfortunately it was only continental! The staff were friendly but not attentive. The only thing that was ok was the comfy bed and linen. I didn't complain as they were holding our luggage until our return from Highclere Castle.
