The castle itself is stunning, and we loved the freedom of being able to wander and sit in the beautiful rooms. We were met by the very lovely Pam, who was delightful, and showed us around and to our room. The room was small but clean with great views over the sea, but there are no locks for the doors…..you can bolt yourself in at night, but if you’re not in the room then it’s unlocked… not everyone’s cup of tea.. Breakfast was very meat driven with no veggie options which is not good....it’s easy to keep some veggie sausages in the freezer and everywhere else we stayed had a really good range of veggie and vegan options. When I asked I was met with a blank stare and was told “it’s what’s on the menu but we can get your some baked beans” .I opted for poached eggs and the plate was literally swimming with water. Service after that was non existent and we were made to feel a little uncomfortable which was a shame. Husband had the full English but the sausages were beef which he didn’t particularly like. Toiletries were OK but not luxury, bright green bottle of shampoo from a supermarket … £200 a night I expected more. People enjoyed the complimentary whiskey which was a nice touch, there seemed to be a good choice for those who liked a dram. Overall it really is a beautiful building and we went down to the shore to watch a sea otter having his evening dinner which was fabulous. Loved the freedom and sitting around in the stunning rooms..I’m torn with this review, as we loved the place and the history, the only thing that soured it for us was the attitude of the woman at breakfast. 80% fabulous…20%. not so good.
