The Tollgate Inn

I booked a room and a table for dinner at 20.30. I arrived at 20.40 to be told the kitchen closed at 20.30. I had not been told this when I made the reservation. Furthermore, the ‘welcome’ was casual to say the least. I never stay in a place where I have an initial poor experience. Therefore, I left and moved to the excellent Timbrell’s Yard who kept their kitchen open to accommodate me.

Beautiful pub with great gardens and views over surrounding countryside. . Food was excellent and the staff were friendly and super helpful. We stayed in one of the holiday cottages. Very comfortable and scrupulously clean with a lovely little garden to sit in out front which we made good use of chilling at the end of a busy day. We found the Tollgate Inn just randomly as we needed to be in that vicinity close to a marina, but we really got lucky. Highly recommend and would definitely go back. Thank for a lovely stay!

Beautiful Inn set in gorgeous location. We stayed here in Samatha for 2 nights and everything was just perfect. The building is very well maintained and it looks like they have just done some external renovations. Definitely recommend this place to anyone, food is just amazing too!

Two nights in Samantha. This is the largest room. It was pokey. The bathroom is the most cramped ever, and we kept our toiletries on the window sill in the bedroom. The promised milk in the fridge never materialised. The view "overlooking our garden full of bloom" was really over the car park, with plenty of white vans but the quoted "have lovely views over the Westbury white horse" was more difficult, as it is seven miles away. The settee and stools shown in the picture of Samantha were missing, and replaced by on very cramped chair only. No table to use a laptop on, so keeping in touch was done perched on the bed. Breakfast was ok, although the bar is gloomy. You have to press for orange juice as the server will just bring what you ask for and not volunteer anything. The first morning we had buttered toast under the cooked full English, so rather soggy. The next morning we asked for marmalade and separate toast, which seemed to surprise them. My breakfast plate a was stone cold on morning 1 although my wife's had been warmed. If all this was billed as a basic pub B&B, we would have been ok, but the overhype, "luxury rooms", "elegant" and so on left us feeling cheated.

What a wonderful little gem. Stayed one nightin a beautifully quaint room, with glourious beams.Great night sleep. Food was amazing. Nothing too much trouble staff. Very friendly welcoming place woud highly recommend and would happily stay again if ever back in the area

Had a great stay here for 3 days. Great welcome when we arrived. We had a double room in the front of the inn, lovely room, nice and bright, plenty of storage. We did hear the traffic in the mornings and we had the window closed so perhaps in the warmer weather it may disturb you. Lovely big shower and gorgeous toiletries. Great idea having them in holders on the wall so no waste. Plenty of teas/ coffees on the welcome tray. We were in the side part of the inn so had our own entrance up some stone steps so not ideal if you have mobility problems. Loved that lights came on as you walked along the hallways. Bed lovely and comfy and we had great nights sleeps. The breakfast was served in the bar, which was so lovely with lovely decor. Brendan was very attentive and helpful with local info. The breakfast was absolutely delicious, hubby had full English and I had cereals followed by the scrambled eggs on granary toast oh both were so delicious and tasty. The crockery was pottery and so beautiful. We were made feel very welcome. We didn’t eat here in the evenings but the menu looked amazing. We will definitely stay here again if we are in that area again. Thank you all for making our stay so lovely. Also a plus free car parking !! As it was so wet we didn’t explore the village but driving through it looked a lovely village

Our room was in a converted barn in the car park. Well appointed with a comfy bed, good tv, and very smart shower room. But the bedroom was small. A good touch was a little fridge (but it was in lieu of a bedside table on 1 side) and there was no room for a chair. The 1st time we used the shower we had problems with it as it slid down the pole and just wet the wall it was in. The shower head dropped off and almost hit me causing me to slip. I just managed to avoid falling over. We reported this to the owner but nothing was done. He later said that the cleaner said she’d fixed it but this was not the case and in any case it was a plumbing or handyman job. I was very uneasy when using the shower after that and we had to manage by holding it in one hand. Meals were good in the whole, if on the expensive side. Waiting staff were good but there was no sitting room, just the pub dining room and outside area with tables. No-one knew about buses into Bradford on Avon or Bath and just told us to use a taxi. ( We wanted to leave our car at the pub. )The pub had a good a**osphere, but staff had to message the owner, who wasn’t always present, with any problems. It is well situated for a short walk into the lovely National Trust Courts Garden.

A lovely two night midweek break in this lovely establishment. Nice comfortable room, great breakfast and lovely friendly staff. We ate in the restaurant both evenings and again the food was excellent. Great location for visiting Bath and other surrounding locations.

We had a 1 night stay on a quick trip to visit relatives in Trowbridge. The hotel room was small and comfortable and okay for a short stay. The restaurant food and breakfast was very enjoyable. The good friendly service from the staff made the stay very enjoyable. There was a good sized parking area and plenty of outside seating. A good short stay.
