Room & vibes Stayed in a traditional tatami room and it was so Japanese in the best way – futon, tatami smell, the whole ryokan fantasy. Super cosy, perfect if you’re here to soak, chill, and live your best onsen‑town main‑character life. Buildings & facilities Hotel has three blocks, all connected via the main building, so you’ll always pass through it anyway. Most of the good stuff – hot springs, buffet etc. – is in the Annex building where I stayed, so it was really convenient, just no Yubatake view (that’s only for the main building rooms). Location & mini shopping zone They literally have their own shopping area on the first floor of the main building, right by Yubatake and the hot spring street, so you can roll out of the hotel in yukata and start browsing. Super easy to snack, shop, then hop back into the onsen without feeling like you “went out”. Transport & walking in snow There’s a shuttle bus to the nearest public transport stop, so luggage days are easy. You can walk it in under 10 minutes, but in snow season the road gets icy and crazy slippery, so honestly not recommended unless you trust your shoes (and your balance). Staff & service energy Hotel staff are amazing – super friendly and actually proactive. Besides Japanese and English, some staff speak Mandarin and will just switch to it to help you out, and they’ll even offer to take photos for you before you have the chance to ask, which is perfect for solo or shy travellers.

C'était notre deuxième voyage à Kusatsu, et nous avons choisi de séjourner deux nuits à l'hôtel Boun. Le petit-déjeuner et le dîner étaient excellents, et le service de l'hôtel a maintenu le niveau élevé habituel des ryokans onsen : attentionné et confortable. Cette fois, j'ai essayé le massage japonais de l'hôtel, et la technique était parfaite, je le recommande ! Kusatsu mérite vraiment sa réputation de meilleure destination thermale, avec le Yubatake enveloppé d'une brume féerique, le Nishinokawara où l'eau de la source jaillit à flots, et le domaine skiable de Kusatsu qui propose de nombreuses activités. J'attends avec impatience notre prochaine visite.

The staff here was amazing. The service was exceptional and the sanitary also really good. Not just that but the food wasn’t just good but also offered an amazing in depth experience into the deep depths of Japanese cuisine. I would recommend anyone to come here if seeking a quick easy nights rest as its close to transportation.

J'ai envoyé un e-mail à l'avance pour réserver une voiture à Karuizawa, et tout s'est bien passé. La chambre était médiocre, toujours malodorante, le décor était vieillot et l'éclairage tamisé. Le dîner était catastrophique ; tout n'était pas délicieux, mais le petit-déjeuner était correct. L'une des trois salles de bain privées était en rénovation, la maison en pierre était couverte de toiles d'araignées et la forêt lumineuse était correcte, quoique un peu petite. Le service du vendeur était plutôt enthousiaste, mais il insistait parfois pour ne parler que japonais lorsque nous disions ne pas comprendre le japonais, ce qui donnait un sentiment d'incompétence face à notre incapacité à communiquer. On sent qu'ils sont beaucoup plus enthousiastes envers les clients japonais ; par exemple, les clients japonais à côté du dîner nous ont présenté les plats en détail, mais nous les avons déposés et sommes partis. Par exemple, un serveur remplissait du Yakult au petit matin. Après avoir posé nos questions, il nous a demandé de rester silencieux, mais il a continué à faire bang bang pour trier les produits. En bref, le rapport qualité-prix est médiocre et j'ai été assez déçu.

The hotel is very popular among the Japanese traveller. Lots of Japanese with very limited foreign traveller. The communication can be a bit difficult at the hotel. The room were cleaned but there is limitation of daily cleaning of the room. They only take trash out and change towels. The policy is to clean the room every 4 days. When the hotel is fully occupied, there is a problem with the scarcity of hot water. We have to wait for hot water to be reproducing 2 out of 3 nights we stayed. The buffet is very crowded and the food are pretty much the same for all 3 nights we stayed for both breakfast and dinner. Our highlights are the crab and the beef station for dinner and the live onigiri station for breakfast.

3 different types of onsen , amazing breakfast with huge selection of food, amazing spacious rooms with an amazing view of the river. Only spent 1 night here but would’ve easily stayed another if we had time. The building is well maintained and the onsen was so good I had 3 sessions even though we were only here for 1 night. Kinchoro is the more exclusive wing of Fuikuichi. The rooms come sight private onsen and it’s similar to most 10 tatami rooms. The service from the staff is good. They are almost invisible when you don’t need them but will magically appear when you need help, during meal times and check in/out time. The food unfortunately seem to be so so only. I didn’t find it spectacular, and in fact fringing on being a bit too inventive. Otherwise, all okay.

Very clean and tidy. Room as pictured. Staff lovely... thank goodness for google translate. Private hot pools great...large. You had to get in quick as no booking - but good sysyem on co.outer to see when free. I American breakfast good (except tomato sauce ON tge omelette). Omelette was light and fluffy. Only about 10 minutes walk to the steps.
