Walking through the large wooden doors of St. James Cathedral will leave you breathless. The vaulted ceilings are covered in stained glass windows and every inch of the church is filled with religious art and ornate furnishings. The stations of the cross are hand carved wooden plaques and in the corner of a pillar is a giant puppet (around 20 ft tall) used for special Christmas masses. There is a lot to see and visitors are welcome anytime between mass hours. This is a place of worship, reflection and beauty so being loud, using a flash camera and disturbing others is a big no-no. Whether you're visiting to say a few prayers for family, lighting a candle for your patron saint or admiring the beautiful architecture, the St. James Cathedral is a must-visit for art lovers, Catholics and anyone else who wants a welcoming space for worship and prayer.
An excellent Catholic cathedral, perhaps not as large as others, but the best kind of people. There is a tour on Wednesdays at 1:00, and be sure to see if there are any public music programs before visiting town. The space is superb for chamber music of many kinds, plus there are two organs built in. For holidays they do four different choirs at each end of the cruciform church. Unlike the common church or temple building with an altar at the far end of a rectangular room, this church has a simple altar at intersection of a cross-shaped space, making the character of a service more about a celebration of faith than a collection of relics and art. There are relics here also, so for the religious this an be an interesting pilgrimage. Catholics should not miss this one.
LOVE LOVE LOVE Saint James Cathedral. This marvelous structure transports your spirit straight to Europe, especially if you close your eyes and listen to the chanting monks.
