Just returned from 60th Birthday celebration here. We stayed in the Manor House suite for 3 nights. The Good = Stunning, historic building, beautiful grounds that are really well kept and a perfect location for Stratford. Nice big, really quiet room and a comfy bed, but the room needs a deep clean, v dusty. Spa = Small but adequate pool and nicely kept entrance & changing rooms...staff here were very friendly & I had an excellent massage. The not so good Service: Despite there being plenty of staff who were in the main friendly, they were disorganised and not at all attentive. For example:I had to go and find someone to place an order for drinks on the terrace (table service??) and when delivered, no drinks mat was used & the drink was spilled a bit (better service needed). Our empty glasses were still on the table some hours later when we walked past – dirty crockery lying around a common theme. Food: The cooked b'fast is plentiful and averagely good. The cold buffet items are woeful, poor quality fruit salad on 1 day, none at all on other days with limited bread items and poor cereal selection...v disappointing indeed. We had dinner in the restaurant (pre- booked) on my B'day and had asked for a quiet table -this request had clearly not been actioned & we had to ask to move as our allocated table was on a bench v close to another table. There doesn't appear to be a maitre d, so the dining room is not well run. The bread rolls were not a good start, v slow to come & whilst warm, poor quality...no sour dough or home made bread? Starters were equally dull, in particular the mackerel which was a tiny single mini fillet, we were shocked. Mains were average & plates were cold. We didn't bother with desert as whilst there was nothing major to complain about or send back, it was all v average and disappointing. It would have been nice to see a B’day gesture of some kind on arrival, in the room or at dinner and although there was a card in our room, not 1 member of staff acknowledged my B'day the entire stay, no glass of bubbly, flowers in the room, cake with a candle or icing on the plate...nothing...it really doesn't take or cost much to make someone feel special...you didn't even try. Overall this hotel leaves you thinking it could be so much better...most of the improvements needed would be so easy to achieve with some effort & better management...it was almost as if you have forgotten what your role is. What is worse is I could have easily just cut and pasted one of the other more negative reviews (that I wish I had read prior to booking) that almost mirror our own experience. Your responses are always similar, you are sorry & will learn from the 'touch points', but this doesn't seem to be the case as nothing has improved as a result of those reviews - please act on this one.
