Tapirus Lodge and Reserve

After arriving into San Jose in the evening we chose to go straight out to the rainforest for our first night. We arrived in the dark but the staff were on hand to meet us at 10pm. We were taking to an accessible room which was up a slight hill but not very far to walk (my mum uses crutches but managed fairly easily). The room while simple had everything we needed and was comfortable for our first night. In the morning we woke up in the middle of the rainforest with a private veranda to admire sights and sounds. Breakfast was a tasty Costa Rican breakfast served in a lovely open air restaurant. We were lucky enough to see a sloth, toucan and hummingbird all before we’d sat down. Staff were very pleasant and our nature guide Marcus was very knowledgeable and welcoming throughout our stay. The Aerial Tramway is quite magical and the butterflies and hummingbirds were beautiful too. I would highly recommend this lodge as a great alternative to staying in San Jose on arrival into Costa Rica. The drive is only about an hour from the airport so not much more than getting through city traffic and the view when you wake up is way more interesting.

The beds in our room were comfortable. We stayed for 3 nights and they never changed towels or emptied the waste baskets, where used toilet paper goes. Because of the humidity the towels never dry so a daily change is suggested. The food in the restaurant is really sub standard and there is nowhere else to eat there. Service in the restaurant is very slow, even when there is only 3 tables in use. The wait staff are very disorganized. There is not a whole lot to do at Tapirs Lodge. I would not stay there again

its is a basic place but really nice, in the middle of the rainforest, great service, very comfortable and its a great place to do hiking, or different activities, also is really close from san jose.

I have conflicting emotions about the place. You can really enjoy nature, seeing animals you've never seen before and trying to understand how does it feel to live in these contexts. However, you willl pay "everything" is not bed and breakfast (night tour walk, cableway, zip lines, and so on), and you'll pay a lot (the baseline price is not cheap, BTW). It'd be much appreciated to increase the rate, if necessary, and offer some baseline experiences each guest. I don't know if I'd recommend the cableway, you'll see at maximum a couple of monkeys. You can have the same experience in other Costarican parks, without paying that much.

Nice accommodation. Quiet from human noises, though lots of birds’ sounds. Dark but torchlight is provided in each room. Reasonable charges. Restaurant is still opened despite low numbers of visitors. Don’t miss this if you like nature.

We spent one night at Tapirus Lodge. The cabins were basic - Very clean, no air-conditioning but they did have fans and the place cooled down at night. The walls between the cabins are thin so be prepared to hear everything going on in adjacent cabins. I liked that they were right in the rainforest and the noises from the forest were amazing. The path up to the cabins is steep so not suitable for anyone with mobility issues. We did two activities while here - aerial tram with a guide and a nature tour with a guide. The guide was great. Both activities are recommended.

The room was not clean and we had to ask for towels and glasses. The meal in the restaurant was far the worst food I have eaten. We sent it back so they could add the items on the dish as advertised. They added cold canned mushrooms to the pasta . Food was substandard. The next morning we were awaken at 5 am by the kids screaming in the next room. The duplex style accommodation had no sound proofing. There was no one available to ask to have the guest quiet down so we had to go over ourselves. When we discussed this later we were informed that there are no staff around until 7am. There was no key to the safe and were told someone had taken it. That was the response. When we checked out they charged us $21 for the inedible food from the night before. There was no offer of a reduction and we were told we could fill out the comment card. Very disappointing experience.

In 2019 I had a four day stay at this lovely spot in the middle of the Rainforest surrounded by colorful butterflies, orchids and even a Tapir! One my first stay I felt so at home that I felt it was hard to leave, a teary farewell and”I’ll be back soon” turned into a two year wait to be able to return. After such a long wait I decided that on my Birthday Celebration return I’d stay nine days, honestly I could have stayed longer and been happy! The staff remembered me and there were excited exchanges of welcome back, so great to see you , finally I was home again in Costa Rica.I had made it back. The idea of returning is what kept me going for two years. The food was always delicious, the breakfast a real treat with the stunning all around vista of the Rainforest and a Sloth as my breakfast companion watching down from its favorite tree. I binged on fresh fruit shakes every day; Papaya, Mango and Pineapple to name a few! For dinner I tried all of the chicken dishes and they were delicious - fortunately I missed the incredible homemade desserts by the chef as they were in the cafe ( My waist thanks me) best tres leches cake I’ve ever had! You might be wondering how did I stay busy - let’s just say I returned exhausted! I signed up for birding tours during the day with the amazing Marvin and we had a great time! My nights I booked with Costa Rican top expert on frogs, Stanley, a resident guide you can book through the park. I worked on my Macro photography until late at night! I learned so much from Stanley Salazar - don’t miss the opportunity to be guided by this knowledgeable young man and enter the world of the most gorgeous frogs I’ve ever seen!! My goal is to spend another birthday there next year! The property is huge, all pristine Rainforest, many options of things to do - maybe I’ll try some trekking next year! Oh - best of all the Tapir had a baby and I was able to see them both! Nothing short of a magical stay…
