Just awful from start and couldn't wait to check out. On arrival the lady checking us in was rudely interrupted by a man who took over and assertively told us that they do not serve alcohol on the premises, rooms do not come with breakfast- have to pay extra for this and the front door is locked at 10am. We were given room 405 (fourth floor, no lift). On route to the room there were open dried paint pots along the landings? No obvious explaination -maybe expecting a leaky roof? We passed a lavatory on route to the room which had the door ajar and a most awful smell coming from within. The room - the standard of clean was clearly very low. The room was very dusty, headboard, TV, ceiling beams, bedside lamps all had a covering of dust. None of the bed linen matched as was a mismatch of faded overwashed whites. The drawers to the desk had opened biscuits, obviously left from previous guests. There was no TV remote in the room so unable to turn on the TV. The bed had one foot/wheel missing which caused the bed to slant to one side. The windows were the original sash however were rotten and did not fully close - thankfully the weather was not cold else there would have been a draft. The furniture was all mismatched and damaged - edging broken off etc. The bathroom was again lacking in cleaning. The shower head did not appear to ever have been cleaned the sink was blocked. There was limited water pressure, leaving a trickle of water from the taps/shower. The water in the toilet then continued to 'run' for a good 10mins after flushing. The toilet seat was marked and stained. Unable to use the shelf in the bathroom was this had sunk causing anything to slide off the edge. Before going out for the evening I was going to use the toilets in the reception area, only to find a key-code lock fixed to the door and a sign stating for guests use only and the door firmly locked. (I didn't bother using these then as I wasn't using the smelly ones I passed earlier nor walking back up 4flights of stairs). On returning to the hotel at midnight (after the door was locked) I called the mobile number provided to contact the "security" to be let in. All four attempts to call the number were met with a message diverting me to voicemail...(three days later and the voice message I left had still not been returned). After simply ringing the doorbell I was let in. I was woken at 2am and 3.15am by the "locals" who spent a good 10mins shouting, fighting and smashing glass. I finally got 2.30hours uninterrupted sleep. When checking out (as soon as possible the next morning) and complaining about the room (my husband also added about the mattress being on the wrong months meaning the had not been changed/flipped - they were still on Jan-March) to be told thanks for letting us know and the mattresses being flipped "Is a man's job so the cleaning girls can't do that". No apology was offered in any way and she just wrote down our list. Madball88 has uploaded photos from

We were given the bridal sweet which was lovely and we found out the hotel had been bought out by an Egyptian company that doesn’t care and is running it into the ground so they can fill it with refugees it’s a 400 year old building that needs to be respected where is our British heritage hero’s now?

Hotel had been taken over by Arabs , so the bar had been shut down and also the restaurant, which we didnt find out till we checked in. Mario the manager is lovely and gave us a free room upgrade to a superior room. Despite this the room werent great, very shabby and not exactly pristine. Feel sorry for him, cos he a lovely man and people were complaining to him, but not his fault.Only there for one night so it didnt bother us too much. If it was to be longer, probably would have moved hotels

After reading derogatory reviews but having no reasonable alternative, I parked in the hotel's on site car park and hesitantly checked in for 2 nights. The manager (hitel had recently changed hands) was friendly and welcoming, told us about the history of the old listed building and to mind the [very] wonky stairs! Room was basic, as anticipated, but clean (although I don't believe it had been hoovered since the previous occupants - slippers needed), it looked as though it had been recently decorated with a new bathroom suite (lino needed replacing), full tea/coffee stuff, toiletries, nice fluffy towels, two fans and a hairdryer. Comfortable bed (even with makeshift foam pillow). Woken up at 6.30am by street cleaners but that only lasted half an hour (had front facing room and slept with the window open); friends at back said they didn't hear a thing. The restaurant wasn't operating which was a shame as it looked lovely, there was no cooked breakfast available, just continental (plenty of greasy spoons in town), no bar (pubs nearby - best bet would be Hare & Hounds on other side of the canal, or the Globe at the opposite end of the Market Place). They had a coffee shop open during the day which seemed to do quite a trade. Car park and doors locked at 10pm each night but I had security's number to call to be let in after hours. Fine for a 1 or 2 night stay. I will add that our friend, who was getting married the next day, was also meant to stay for one night but, despite him having ********** booking ref, the hotel couldn't find his booking. A number of other guests booked this hotel to attend the nearby wedding and (although the hotel had room) the hotel would not honour the groom's booking at the rate he booked. He stayed elsewhere. Not good customer service in that particular instance.

We went for afternoon tea. Parking was at back of hotel. Secure and free. Staff were lovely and Afternoon Tea was very very nice. The fruit scones were absolutely gorgeous. We had a doggy bag as there was a lot of food. Excellent Very old historical hotel

15 people booked here to attend a party nearby. No bar shut. No food restaurant closed. Never told any of us. Had to buy water and snacks. Had to buy batteries for remote for TV. Had to get extension cable to turn on lights in room. Learnt that Egyptian company bought hotel 3 weeks ago and told management to remove all alcohol and food. Turning hotel into a ‘sharia’ hotel. Please be aware. This is a waste of money and we should have been told. Paid £99 for so called luxury room. Well dream on.
