Thompsons Arms Cottages

My friend Tony and I stayed here for one night in May 2023. Tony had a room in the main pub building but I had a one bedroom"cottage" in the courtyard. We were both delighted with our accommodation - clean and well-maintained. The cottage had a fully-equipped kitchenette including an oven, microwave, pots and pans etc... The bar of the pub only opens for evening trade and if there are no customers after 9pm it will close early. Stuart the landlord and his wife Lili were friendly and welcoming and they offered a nice full English breakfast in the morning - served in the bar area at a supplementary cost of £7.50 each. We used the place as a base for walking and this included a nice long ramble around the Castle Howard estate which is four miles east of the "Thompsons Arms". It was a perfect place to stay and good value too. I would happily return.

Excellent, traditional b&b. We stayed for 2 nights for a wedding at nearby Sandburn Hall and couldn’t have been happier with our stay. Stuart was so helpful and made us feel very welcome, even giving us a lift to and from the wedding. Breakfast was lovely and great value for money. Highly recommend a stay here!

first time staying at the Thompson arms, and we definitely hope to return. A friendly welcome by Stuart, and the one bed cottage was lovely. The cottage was very clean and situated in a charming gated courtyard. Everything you could need for a short stay is available, including an iron and ironing board to help with those packing case creases!! We only stayed for one night to attend an event close by, but wished it had been longer. The price of drinks in the pub made a refreshing change from the over inflated price we are used to being charged, and the atmosphere was welcoming. An added bonus is that the pub is also dog friendly. We opted to have a full English breakfast, and are very glad we did. Reasonably priced and delicious, complements to the chef! If you want good value and a warm welcome, I would highly recommend.

Lovely little cottage, very clean and secure. The Wi-Fi did not work and TV reception was poor. Owners are very friendly and helpful but had to leave us because of attending a wedding therefore were not on site to resolve issues. Thompson Fish Restaurant was nearby offering superb food.

We stayed as a family of three while visiting Flamingo land recently. If you are looking for a quiet country stay then definitely this is a place for you. The bedding is spotless. Absolutely beautiful and very quiet place to stay . I cannot recommend highly enough. Stuart and Lili have made out stay unforgettable. Very kind and caring hosts have made us so welcome and we left with the feeling like we knew them for years.! I really hope we will see them again one day when on a next trip down South. Great full English breakfast too and yeah the cider and a pint in a pub ( run by Stuart) at the end of the busy days made lots of our memories came back. Very grateful for our stay, thank you very much!

Brilliant find! We stayed one night whilst attending a wedding at Sandburn Hall and we had a great stay! The owner, Stuart, was really helpful and made our trip seamless, right from checking in, to getting to and from the wedding venue which was a huge help! We stayed in one of the cottages which was cosy, clean, comfortable and had everything we needed. We had breakfast in the pub the following morning and it was fantastic! Great value and delicious food. We would not hesitate to stay again. Thank you Stuart!

Excellent place to stay. Comfortable clean and an amazing breakfast. Lovey pub hosts very friendly. We stayed there as a family wedding in Sandburn Hall. Stuart (host) will help with transport If booked in advance. Highly recommend this beautiful place. Thank you. 😊

I booked to stay here for one night as me and my partner were attending a wedding at sandburn hall, Stuart was lovely when we arrived and very welcoming. He also took us too and from our wedding. The cottage we stayed in was lovely and just everything we needed for our nights stay. Me and my partner would definitely recommend and will hopefully be visiting again. Thank you Stuart!

We booked to stay for 1 night while dropping our daughter to Uni. We arrived earlier than planned and messaged ahead, we were met on arrival by a lovely gentleman who showed us around the bar and explained how to come and go when the bar was closed. We were then shown to our room which was absolutely beautiful, immaculately clean. We will definitely be booking to stay again when we visit/drop/collect to Uni. If you are looking for somewhere quiet to stay but within easy reach of York, this place is absolutely perfect. Thank you Stewart.
