Step back in time in Valletta, one of Europe’s smallest capital cities!

Head to the stunning capital city of Malta, that is Valletta. Known for its museums, palaces and grand churches, this walled city is a cultural masterpiece. After walking in through the city gate, we headed over to Auberge de Castille. Sitting at the highest point of Valletta, this building was built in the beautiful Baroque style architecture in the 1740’s. From here, you can get some great panoramic views of the city, and it is also just a stones throw away from the Upper Barraka. Many people describe this as one of the best views in Malta, and they’re not wrong. The garden is beautiful in its own right, but when you step out onto the terrace and are treated to the views of the grand harbour and the three cities, you can’t help but be blown away. It’s also from here that you can witness a bit of history that you won’t want to miss. Every day apart from Sunday, at midday and 4pm, the guns are fired from a restored British Saluting battery, located at the lower tier of the bastion. Here’s my top tip - don’t pay for entry into the bastion. You get a perfect view from the gardens, and you don’t have to pay a penny. By this time, you’ve probably worked up an appetite, so after a bit more exploring, make sure you grab a pastizz. It’s a savoury pastry, with either ricotta or curried peas inside. They’re a cheap eat, so why not grab one of each! To finish off the day, make sure you check out Valletta at night. One particular highlight is the Triton Fountain after sunset.
