Macdonald Cardrona Hotel, Golf and Spa

I ended up staying at the Cardrona overnight as I was my friends plus 1 at a wedding on the 14th of September 2024. She was also doing the hair for the bride, ect, and I helped her out. It made sense to stay, as we needed to get ready for the wedding after all the bridal partys hair had been done ! We were able to get earlier access to our room, which was greatly appreciated. I thought the wedding was beautiful, The waiting staff during the meal worked extremely hard, The food was lovely too, I'm veggie, and I was delighted with the choice, The room was also discounted for all-day wedding guests, too, the bar staff were great too !I did think the price for a large glass of wine was a bit steep ! £12 ! I must mention a few special members of staff who really left a good impression! Roxanne was wonderful, so attentive, and such a warm, welcoming attitude. Alistair, who was on reception overnight, was lovely & helpful, Bayler, the night porter was absolutely wonderful ! We were really hungry later after the wedding had finished, and he very kindly made us thee most lush sandwichs! Couldn't thank him enough, I needed to take meds and had to eat ! And last, buy not least the amazing, wonderful Carol ! The housekeeping manager, She had been wonderful the last time I had stayed at the Christmas party night I attended with my husband for our anniversary, She was amazing that night and actually remembered me ! I thought that was incredible considering the number of guests she must meet ! She's just lovely and so caring. Praise where Praise is due. I did feel the duty manager seemed a bit overwhelmed. There were issues with the lifts not working, and there were people with mobility issues, including myself, They stopped working! That's really poor for a huge hotel chain, and extremely inconvenient for disabled guests, well almost impossible for them to move freely through the hotel, as the wedding venue is on the 2nd floor! The rooms are nice, but could do with a wee makeover ! Time to decorate Mr Mcdonald ! And install new lifts ! And lastly, the lovely Fiona on reception when we checked out. My husband & I will be back again in December to one of the Christmas party nights to celebrate our anniversary again. We look forward to seeing everyone then. I hope the staff are appreciated by management ! As they are all clearly very studious.

3x blokes, road cycling trip across Scotland. September 2023. Fantastic hotel, and exceptionally good value. Location is brilliant, lovely ride in along the marked Scottish C2C route, the hotel is right on the route so no detours. Staff excellent and friendly from start-to-finish. Checked our 3 bikes into the self-service secure storage. Enjoyed a great (well earned) 3 course dinner in the hotel restaurant, which had a great a**osphere and as mentioned, lovely staff. (There is also a great brewery tap next door if you fancy a change of scenery - we didn't manage to get further than that in the village!) Breakfast served early, first-class traditional Scottish - but plenty of other options. Unlimited coffee and juice, we were really happy. Rooms are good for the price, simple ”pub with rooms” style, remember. Everything needed for a stay of this type. It was very hot, but I still slept well. Highly recommended, we'd stay at Traquair Arms again without hesitation.

I went with my kids, mid-20s and 16yrs, for a night away from Edinburgh just before Xmas. It was a Sunday, so it was quiet. The distance makes it easy to escape to for an overnighter. We went mostly for spa and gym, and we weren't disappointed. The gym, pool area, sauna and changing rooms were very clean and well- equipped and all in working order. The facilities are open till 10pm, and the best thing is we could use it after we checked out at 11am the folliwing day. Best thing about facilities for us was sauna and spay jets, so relaxing and came away feeling fantastic. The bar meal we had was excellent, the nachos were awesome and gluten- free options were clearly labelled, while the waitress also checked with the kitchen. Pizzas were great but we couldn't finish them and they boxed the remainder. Cocktails were very well presented, looked fab. Every staff member was helpful and friendly. Rooms were comfortable and clean, although the decor was bland and furniture was a little tired- looking. Still, we loved the squeaky floorboards. The Christmas decorations were lovely but not over- the- top. We will definitely spread the word and we will return.

Cringletie House

We spent a wonderful Hogmanay at Cringletie House. The hotel had a special Hogmanay program with guests arriving on the 30th December and departing on the 2nd January. All the meals were included, with a lovely dinner each evening preceded by a cocktail reception hosted by the owners of the hotel, Bill and Ann Cross. Each day also had its own activities including archery, falconry and a cookery demonstration. With only 14 rooms the hotel has an intimate feel and you certainly got to know your fellow guests, particularly when practicing for the ceilidh on New Year's Eve! This is not an ”all singing, all dancing” hotel, for example, there is no gym or spa, but it is run more like a ”house party” with the focus on personal attention and a warm welcome. Most of the fellow guests were couples although there were two families, including ourselves, and while this is perhaps not an obvious destination for younger guests the activities did manage to span the wide range of ages. Perhaps the best recommendation is that many of the guests were regular visitors to Cringletie House, and indeed by the time we left on the 2nd January half of the rooms had already been booked for the next Hogmanay!
